Great picture John. Does he get to add the nose print beside your signature?
It's a beautiful day, and I have it off. I'm contemplating what to do with the day - have a few chores, but otherwise - I'm feeling pretty freakin' lazy. Down to the guitar store, methinks.

I had another post written earlier, but lost it when my web connection hiccuped and it timed out. That's annoying as heck.
Suffice it to say.....
Mornin'.....
Leaving momemtarily to go play a memorial service at the nursing home. Aside from our usual monthly set, we go in and do these every time they have a resident pass away.
Back ina while.

It looks to be another nice cool day. Still making progress....slow but moving in the right direction. I've got some Miles Davis and John Coltrane playing on music box this morning....I feel the need for dark sunglasses and coffee today!

two years ago the school band needed six cajons for the half time show. They purchased one and had the wood shop build the rest. The Shop teacher was like, "So a cajon is a wooden box? That's it? How many do you want?" When they were all done and stained, you couldn't tell which ones were which based on sound alone. It is a wooden box that you hit with your hands. Don't spend too much for one.

"(There's probably some interesting Spanish derivation for the difference between cajons and cajones.)"
No relation. The latter is "cojones."
Wikipedia: "The word has entered popular use in the United States as a slang term meaning to have a brazenly brave attitude. It is used in a way similar to chutzpah or sisu. Anglicized/Americanized pronunciations include IPA: /kəˈhoʊneɪz/ or the less accurate /kəˈhuːnəz/. A very frequent misspelling (sometimes done deliberately as a euphemism) is cajones, which actually means 'drawers' (the piece of furniture) or 'wooden box drums' (see cajón) in Spanish."

The front face is thin wood (plywood). It's screwed to the frame. Supposedly you can tune it by tightening the screws. The tricky part is adding some guitar strings inside on the two vertical sides of the sounding board. It makes the edges sound like a snare, whereas banging the center gives a sound like a bass drum.
Sure it'd be easy to build one. But never having seen one in the flesh, I opted to order one. The one I got was an ebay auction sold through Novica (National Geogrpahic's web venture). For $142 it came shipped from an artisan in Peru in a custom embroydered, zippered, strapped case. It's a solid cedar frame w/dovetail joinery; nicely stained.
And it sounds great. Deep bass, and snappy slappy rim-shot snare sound around the edges.
My hands are a little red and puffy this morning. I think I need to pick up some brushes for a try at a different softer sound.
It's really cool.

An empty Leinie's Honey Weiss 12-pack box works well with brushes, as do Domino's pizza cartons.
Russ Letson taught me this.
