MILAN — An Italian judge says he has convicted 23 Americans of the 2003 kidnapping of an Egyptian cleric from a Milan street in a CIA extraordinary rendition.
Citing diplomatic immunity, Judge Oscar Magi told the Milan courtroom Wednesday that he was acquitting three other Americans.
Twenty-two of the convicted Americans were immediately sentenced to five years in jail at the end of the nearly three-year trial. The other convicted American, Milan CIA station chief Robert Seldon Lady, was given the stiffest sentence, eight years in prison.
All of the Americans were tried in absentia.

Does this mean FOX will start calling for a boycott of italian food?

If French Fries became Freedom Fries what will Italian Dressing become? And Italian Ice? Maybe we can claim religious persecution and change Italilan Dressing to Cross Dressing?

Not sure about the impact of this symbolic verdict, but if they're unleashing the Fiat on us they must really hate us.

Actually the existence of Olive Garden could be even more evidence that Italy doesn't like us.
Not to mention Pizza Hut, Chef Boyardee, etc.

If you look at those places as a cunning scheme devised by Italian gourmets to keep you folks off the good stuff, then I agree. Otherwise, their mere existence could be seen as a reason for Italian distrust, if not overt dislike, towards American taste.

I'm not gonna go out of my way to boycott a place with good food. Avoiding Olive Garden is easy.

hmm. When you're on the road as often as I am, the OG's soup and salad is a wonderful alternative.

Hmm. Sounds to me like what the Italians actually don't like is the CIA. And Olive Garden franchisees.
Viva l'Italia.

The CIA extraordinary rendition practise ignores local law, extradition procedure, and international norms. They were kidnapping people in public and removing them to third countries for interrogation and detention.
Italy didn't much like having their laws ignored and their sovereignty disrespected. If it was Russians they were taking to court, we'd applaud them for it... wouldn't we?

Funny, I hadn't even heard about this. The problem is, Americans are too nice. If it was the Russians or the Israelis, they would have just shot the guy and had done with it....

Yeah but. Its hard to interrogate a dead guy. Or use him for bargaining chips.
Besides this is America, we have standards. Why do the simple thing when we can complicate it. That's why we have Gitmo and secret detention facilities in Blatsoshoovia.

This gets me curious, J.....Is The Old Spaghetti Factory still there in downtown Nashville? Did you ever eat there? Couldn't be too far from Belmont. My wife loved their spaghetti with browned butter and Mizithra cheese.

I don't know about a downtown location - there was one in Green Hills, but I've never set foot in it.
Sorry, I'm kind of a snob.
