We're in Winchester. We've been down through Charlottesville a couple of times with softball tournaments. My wife harbors a secret desire to work at UVA when she graduates.
Maybe someday we'll be nieghbors.

UVA is where I work, it's a nice place (if you are in the right department) She is likely to find work there as an RN when she is finished with her school. I've never spent much time in Winchester, do you like it there?

We love it here. We came from Detroit 8 years ago and have settled in nicely. Great schools, the kids are happy, and it's just big enough to feel not quite too small for a big city boy.
3 years ago when I was looking for work, we took our chances on trying to stay and it worked out, but now I've got an hour commute (Hagerstown) rather than uproot.
But going forward as the kids move on, we're examining our options.
My wife is going to school out at Lord Fairfax and working in the NICU at Winchester Medical Center which is 2 miles away. She loves it but she's not taking hospital money to pay for her school, since she doesn't want to be locked in there when she's done. Our daughter was a preemie at UofM and my wife really got the NICU bug there. She'd love to work in a similar big college hospital, even considering going back to Ann Arbor.
But she'll be 44 when she graduates and she's pretty sure she'll be too old for anywhere then.
I constantly have to tell her she's out of her mind.

Oh no, that's not old at all. Lots of people change careers in their 40s and 50s. It sounds like you found a good place to be. If you came to Cville, I think you'd like it here too. So you are Michiganders as they call them. My family is from Battle Creek. My parents moved to Chicago before I was born though but everyone else is from MI. Most of them are still there too. My Aunt and cousins worked at Kellogg's too.

I'm actually from Salt Lake City originally. My folks moved to Detroit when I was 6 and I grew up there.
My wife's family is from Norton, VA, down in the very southwest corner of the state. They moved to the Detroit area before my wife was born, but she's still pretty hardcore hillbilly.
Almost all of our families are still in Detroit.
We think we'd like Charlottesville because of the stuff to do there. Winchester's nice, but it's a sleepy bedroom community. Another possibility would be Asheville, NC since Volvo has a facility there.
One of the reasons for the second Master's though is to get out of engineering and do some adjunct college teaching, so we're not really tied to the idea of having to follow my work.
We'll see. As my wife says, it'll probably come down to staying near the kids. And that's alright too.
So how did y'all end up out here?

I knew I wanted to leave Chicago (too much crime & hassles of big city life) and go somewhere else but I wasnt' sure where. So I did some traveling and took a summer job in upstate NY and met some people who lived here. So, when I was in between jobs I came to visit them and one time I just never left. That was in '89. It has all the elements of a big city with lots to do but with a small town feel--less crime, etc. Plus it's beautiul here with the Blue Ridge mountains. Only problem is it is getting very crowded as lots of people are coming here. USA Today voted it the #1 city to live in a few years ago and it's been booming ever since. Can't keep a good secret, I guess.

Have you considered an eliptical machine? Much easier on your knees and joints and you get a great workout.

Yes, we've considered ellipetical machines. But we've done this before and it suits us.
And my wife hates ellipticals.
