Fares to Detroit are noticeably cheaper than fares to Toronto, and the drive doesn't appear too long. Can any of you tell me if there's something wrong with that approach?

Flake, given that fares are cheaper to Detroit I would fly there. Toronto International has a lot of airport taxes and that adds to your fare. The drive up from Toronto to here is about three hours. The drive from Detroit is noticeably longer but once across the border you are in a much less populated area and you will be driving through rolling Ontario farmland which is quite pleasurable. I would take the highway up the eastern side of Lake Huron and then cut across when you get to Southampton. I expect that route adds a few hours to your trip, but they are good hours.

No, that's a great approach. Rent a car at DTW and use the Google Maps route crossing the Blue Water Bridge at Port Huron/Sarnia. It's about a 4-1/2 hour drive parallel to the Lake Huron coast. You can stop on the way to view and photograph the lighthouses and other cool stuff.
The drive from YYZ (Toronto Pearson) to Owen Sound is about 2-1/4 hours (according to Google Maps). We drove that way when we headed to Niagara Falls from Owen Sound. I prefer the drive near the coast that Sekh suggested.
This year we'll be coming from east Tennessee or thereabouts so we'll go through Port Huron/Sarnia too although a day or two earlier.

Maybe a feller from MSP could get a cheapo flight to Detroit and share the car rental with a feller from Feenicks.

It seems there will also be a private car traveling between Grand Rabbits, MI, and Owen Sound, ON, along in there some time. Maybe Tamarack would have room for a passenger. Who knows?

I think two and a quarter hours on Google maps is making the assumption that there is no traffic in Toronto. It's brutal. Pretty much jammed up morning til night. Port Huron/Sarnia is a good border to cross - pretty quick and not much fuss.
billiam, the drive from Grand Rabbits to Owen Sound is probably a good plan if Tamarack has room.
I confirmed the dates with our next door neighbours and they were pleased to be able to help. So there are potentially 7 spaces there and like I said, one loft in the studio for the hardy, a single room in our house and a large garden for tenting. Talk among yourselves ...

I call the studio loft. Worrying that my snoring might attract amorous moose, though.

Bill, we'd be delighted to give you a ride, but we'll probably arrive in the area early and stay in the area after others leave, and we won't want to fly to Detroit and drive to Owen Sound all in one day. If we're going that far, we want to add some sight-seeing. I suspect that might complicate matters from your standpoint.

We're (Kari & me) likely driving up troo Mo-town on the way to northern climes. If we can coordinate something and room is available in our vehicle we can possibly pick someone up.
The ride up the east coast of Lake Huron is lovely. Not quite insterstatee in terms of speed, but enjoyable in it's expanse. Then crossing inland across the base of the Bruce is lovely. And Owen Sound is just peachy.
I'm out of town and just logging in intermittently this week. But suffice it to say I'm very excited about another visit with K&L, and M&J, and Tam, and others (Howard ? kewl ! Cornflake? wow ! [let me hear you say "Photo-op"} and Willy? great !)
Come one. Come all.

This is ASSUMING I can get the time off, which is a stretch ....

Bill, don't you feel an illness coming on slowly? One that will make work impossible in roughly four months?

Bill, don't you feel an illness coming on slowly? One that will make work impossible in roughly four months? I just looked at the time-off request list and that period looks mercifully open, GOD BE PRAISED! Have just enough time to pick up "Rosetta Stone Speak Canadian," too!

On the drive up to Owen Sound be sure to stop in Kincardine and pick up a bagpipe CD and drop by Wiarton to visit Wiarton Willie, Canada's Punxsutawney Phil.
Wish I could join you but it is not likely.

Rob, I can't edit your post directly but I'm sure this is what you meant: On the drive up to Owen Sound be sure to stop in Kincardine and pick up a bagpipe CD and drop by Wiarton to drop it in Wiarton Willie's (Canada's Punxsutawney Phi) burrow.

LOL Dub!
On the drive to Owen Sound be sure to stop in Kincardine and pick up a Brian Pickell cd and then take it straight to your destination, avoiding Wiarton like the plague if you know what's good for you.

I've just discovered that it's a dollar cheaper to rent a car—with GPS unit—for four days than it is to take the GreyBruce Airbus round trip from Pearson Airport to Owen Sound.
Just sayin'. It's also nicer to let someone else who knows where the heck they're going do the driving, even if one is more tightly bound to a schedule.
Decisions, decisions.
