The local tavern is like that.A place for multigenerational people to hang out. I never used to go. But most the open mics I attend are in bars. You become used to the bar room etiquette. You're expected to strike up a conversation with the stranger next to you. If you actually talk to the person for any length of time; share a laugh or two, you might even ask the person's name. Beer helps. Around here, there are several places where the seniors meet every day. The busiest is Bojangles where they can get a senior coffee for free (with unlimited refills).

One of the few things I appreciated about Afghanistan was the respect with which elders are treated. Older folks in Korea are treated with more respect as well. I think our society is too fractured to care. We are a cast-away society on many levels, with a short attention span. Old people just get in the way. This. It's our culture that is far out of step.

With three years to go, I'm not sure what/where my third place might be. Hopefully not a bar, but even more hopefully not a MacDonalds. Maybe here?Tho that's summer, and winter would have to be someplace else. (or there and not swimming)
