Not at all. And what's funny is the number of folks who chime in about how those economies in Europe and Canada are going to fall apart under the load of social welfare. Yet who is running up the most public debt?
I do believe that one of the main reasons us Canuckistanis are doing better over the last little while is that we had a balanced budget and were in good financial shape when the crisis hit. Our conservative government managed to stick a knife in that, but we didn't crash as hard or far as the USA. It shows now.

This comports with what I see among the people I know. I love it when you talk lawyer. . . . , or did you mean this: "After-tax middle-class incomes in Canada — substantially behind in 2000 — now appear to be higher than in the United States."All the more reason to invade the bastards.

We don't have free health care. We pay a bundle for it. Every time I buy anything - goods or services, I pay a whopping 15% tax. A middle class income in Canada is taxed 30%. The wealthiest Canadians enjoy a similar tax break as they do in the USA, which they shouldn't, and the middle class carries most of the tax burden. We have the same stagnant middle class incomes as you guys in the States do. But is medical care free? Nope.

What's interesting, Katherine, is that it says your middle class has the edge in after-tax income, so it isn't as if you're doing well but the government sucks it all up.

I'm not Medicare is all it's cracked up to be. Anybody notice that Medicare don't even cover a PSA test?

Besides, PSAs are not all that reliable. My old doc (who was actually younger) thought they yielded too many false positives and stopped recommending them.

I'm not Medicare is all it's cracked up to be. Anybody notice that Medicare don't even cover a PSA test? It paid for mine last month along with the CT scan and other blood work. I did have about $200 in co-pays to find out that my kidneys, liver, prostate and femoral arteries are in good shape and my PSA is 0.8. I guess that's worth $200.

dickt: I have Part A & B and part D. I passed on the part C cause someone convinced me that this was an acronym for Crompispomp which was shorthand for lower colon research; after which, I further decided, that I rather die the ole fashion way.
Russell: I know, I know. Coffee is good for you, coffee is not good for you. Yada is good for you, but yada is not good at all... yada yada... the best we can do is hedge our bets. I remember recently reading something about how poisonous apples are for you. And here I've been thinking I'm regulating regularity. I'm not beyond thinking that modern health is one great big crap shoot.
Bruce: you're a better man than I am, Gunga Din. My letters tell me to pay now and argue afterwards. I'd bee happy to pay for your bargain.

Marshall, any time you want to invade you just go right ahead. I'll leave the light on in the porch for you. Flake, I glanced at an article yesterday that said that, while Canadians enjoy a very healthy middle-class income ours in free-fall, worse than any country in the developed world. I'm not surprised at that. Elections are coming in 2015. Perhaps we can start to turn that around afterwards.

Besides, PSAs are not all that reliable. My old doc (who was actually younger) thought they yielded too many false positives and stopped recommending them. This is a very important point. All tests have a false positive and false negative rate. If you do a lot of random tests, some may turn up positive when nothing is there. A false positive PSA leads to a prostate biopsy, which has a complication rate, a more than moderate cost, and significant discomfort. Tests should only be ordered when pre test probability tells you it is warranted. Hence, evidence based vs. shopping channel medical decisions.
