Because nothing happens in Washington unless it's a crisis ?

It's a crisis because it's been in the news a lot lately and we've got to show we're doing something about it?
And if we don't, somebody is going to get blamed for it ?
And we don't want that to be our side (if somehow we can put the blame on the other side)?

Is your question "Why is this considered a crisis," or is it "Why did this become a crisis?"

Is your question "Why is this considered a crisis," or is it "Why did this become a crisis?" Yes Oh. Then the answer is simple. Because. (No, don't thank me.)

So, round up all the adult illegal immigrants, give them each a couple of the unaccompanied child illegal immigrants, drop them all off at the border, facing south, and tell them to go home the same way they got here... and use the rest of the four billion to care for veterans and other American citizens.

That's more or less what's happening now. But you can't do it for free. Even if we shot every single person who tried to cross the border and just left their bodies to rot in the sun, we couldn't do it for free. I know that $4 billion sounds like a lot of money, but you have to look at it in context on a national scale. That's only a sixth of what Republicans spent to shut down the government for no reason. And since we never hear them complain about the tab, I think we have to assume that $24 billion is chump change.

She got kicked off fb because of it. She probably needs another social media outlet. She's already got the ammo. And appears to be a decent shot. Could be a win-win.

I thought, in addition to central American social ills, the Dream Act provided an inducement. But I just looked at a cliff notes version (Wiki) and it seems that one had to have been residing here for 5 yrs before enactment.
We sure have lots of central Americans here, many of them having come in through New Orleans during the turbulent 80s. And now a new influx has hit the local area. Food hint: Salvadoran pupusas are a gastronomic treat. There's a pupuseria operating out of an old school bus near LSU that stays busy serving the local migrant population.

Our forever-porous border seems like a biggie to me. Gimme 4 billion and I'll build something to slow the influx.

Lesssseeeee, a billion is a thousand million. I could build a pretty decent half-mile fence for a mill. That would get me 2000 miles, right?

Hah! Just looked it up...US Mexico border is 1993 miles. Since quite a few areas have substantial fences already, the extra dough can go into other deterrents...the greatest of which would be a sane, streamlined immigration policy...current one is 'stuck on stupid'

The article sure does not describe a "crisis" element. Maybe just poor reporting? Are children subject to a new element of suffering? Is the retention of children costing a large amount of money? It fails to indicate any immediate problem that suggests "crisis" to me. I think it is a case of "crisis" being more attention grabbing than "problem."

Even in jest, that is not funny. How desperate does a 9 year old have to be to head north alone from Guatemala or El Salvador? Mike

Sorry Mike. Just another case of headline-overload. Every day a new crisis. And trying to make light for no good reason other than there's not much else I feel I can do.
Of course under every crisis, fabricated or not, are real lives in very difficult situations.
You're a good man.

How did what start? Why is what a crisis? Why do we suddenly have tens of thousands of children trekking across Mexico and finding their way into the USA? How does something like that happen? When you were that age, would you have done it....or more to the point, known HOW to do it? Would your ten year old self have known not just how to make the trek, but that you'd get into the USA before you even started the trek? I mean, there are so many baffling questions that occur to me WAY before any political ones do. I'm trying to envision what started the avalanche. And why is it a crisis? For the most part, we don't give a shit about that border anyway. If I am to believe what I read, only the most crazed, racist Americans give a tinker's damn HOW many or WHO crosses that border anyway. Everyone else is occupied with how to care for them, enroll them in school, and get them health care. Is THAT the crisis? More mouths to feed? Is THAT it?
