I get a message 2-3 times a day from Firefox stating a script has stopped responding. It always starts with something like chrome://script.blah, blah blah. ( blah blah blah indicating meaningless and always changing programmer blather). Who the hell let chrome on my mac air, and how do I get rid of it. It is functioning as an evil virus that snuck its way onto my laptop uninvited.

Thanks, Russell. Thought I was all alone down here in this dark pit.(except for the scratching, nibbling and slithering sounds in the even darker corners.)

I thought only PCs had dark corners with tentacled lurkers.

I'm using Chrome on PC. I have IE, Firefox, and Opera also. I used to like Firefox but it just got too bloated. Somethings I don't like about Chrome but so far I'm liking it best of the 4 browser I have.

Suggest you actually switch to Chrome. I have and never looked back No. Chrome is just like drug companies, undermining their competitors with evil maneuvers, til they are the only ones standing. Chrome may prevail, just like windows, but I will stick with Firefox to the bitter end.

Suggest you actually switch to Chrome. I have and never looked back Chrome suggests that daily with ads that say my browser is outdated and may cause problems, Switch now? Seems they created those problems to make us switch. I hate that a few months from now I may be using Chrome because of these underhanded tactics.

Chrome may prevail, just like windows, but I will stick with Firefox to the bitter end. I understand the Chrome problem with it being Google based. I was leaning toward Opera to get away for the big boys but it just wasn't as stable as Chrome and I liked the layout less than the Chrome layout.

I don't think that Chrome is the Firefox problem I think it's Firefox bloat.

Where do these ads appear? I don't know what it's like in Macworld, but the only time I see your-browser-needs-updating notices they're from Firefox itself. Chrome proper never talks to me because I didn't install it when I set up my new machine a few months back. I gave in and let Firefox update itself to 31 when I brought up the new Win 7 system and found the Classic Theme Restorer plug-in that lets me arrange the screen the way I like it, so the only update nags I get are Firefox's own. (And I never let it update automatically.)

I'm a Firefox guy. I stay as far away from Google's clutches as I can get. Chrome will data mine you to death. The evil minions of Google will eventually cast us all into that dark pit, but until then I will surf unfettered by cookies and widgets, alive-alive-o.

I'm for Firefox also. Didn't like Chrome at all, and I've tried it twice.

When you want anonymity online, check out the TOR Project ( www.torproject.org). It slows things down a little but you won't be tracked—given that you adhere to sensible safety rules in the first place. The Web site should link to tools for your platform. I use Chrome sometimes as an alternate browser on my Mac. I've had no issues. Still, the browser I use most is Safari. There are performance trade offs of course, but I get the consistently best performance on OS X (latest versions of everything) using Safari. I long ago determined I'd never use Firefox again if I could help it and don't keep a copy on my system. I made that decision some years back and, just now, can't recall why. But I think there were important reasons. I'll try to dredge them up. I tend not to revisit things like this very often. Life's too short. The latest browser I've come across is called iCab ( www.icab.de/info.html). I've only tried the iOS version so far but I really like it. Check out the attributes I've linked and see what you think. I haven't tried the OS X version yet but will soon. I'd love to hear what other Mac users think.

I’ve downloaded the iCab browser for OS X and I’m using it to post this reply. When I posted earlier today I was on their Web site reading about the product. Thirty minutes ago, I went there to see about downloading it and the Web site seems gone. The browser can be downloaded from sites such as c|net so that’s what I did. I didn’t find it in the Apple App Store but the mobile version is in the iTunes App Store. Turns out this browser has been around for a long time. It has some interesting filter options that may help with security and activity tracking. I’ll read up on those and report back.
It seems to load pages quickly and doesn’t seem to be bogged down with a bunch of add-ons. I think I read that is supports HTML4 but it doesn’t list HTML5.

On my Mac I use Safari with DuckDuckGo as my search engine. It isn't as robust as Google, but it doesn't track you...and you can opt to search in encrypted Google from within DuckDuckGo.
Works for me...
