Nutjob. Not a terrorist.
We live in an age when it seems like so many people have an online presence. When they do something that makes the news in a negative way, that online presence will be scrutinized by reporters. Some of these reporters (and their editors) are lazier than others, and they are more than happy to take some flippant comment the person made on Facebook or Twitter and inflate it into a detailed map of the person's persona and motivations. Some (like the guy in Oklahoma) make more than flippant comments so maybe the "map" isn't too far off the mark. But it is still a matter of people who are not mental-health professionals (reporters and editors) diagnosing a person with limited information. When these diagnoses make it into the public ether, the consumers of those news stories filter them through their own biases and judgments.
As someone who worked in newspapers for 37 years and know the dynamics on the news-gathering/production/consumption continuum, I kind of wonder how people know anything about the world around them.

Maybe I'm missing something. Can someone explain why "terrorist" and "nut-job" should be exclusive from one another?

So robbing a bank doesn't make me a bank robber if someone says I was influenced by a bank robber? If I develope the skills of a fisherman and use the equipment, language, and techniques of a fisherman to catch fish it doesn't mean I'm a fisherman as long as someone explains it away that I was just influenced by a fisherman?

My flatpicking has been heavily influenced by Tony Rice. So, I'm Tony Rice. Just a sec. I don't SOUND like Tony Rice. WTF?
