Or he could use an iPhone (or iPod touch?) to point down at the book and have that image displayed on the vertical iPad. I think there may be a way to that.

That is exactly what the kid thought of yesterday. There are mirroring and screen-reading apps out there that would work, but that would mean he's dependent on the internet to use it. Which isn't terrible, but it'd be nice to hook the two up directly.

you might give this a shot

two apps. camera a and camera b Camera A costs $1. Camera B is free. Link the two via built in Bluetooth or local wifi so internet connectivity isn't required. Whatever you shoot on Camera B (from the iphone) is displayed on Camera A (on the ipad).

Don't know why we didn't think of this earlier.
I Googled (without quotes) "iPad as CCTV monitor". The search returned all sorts of ways to do this including direct cabling from an inexpensive CCTV camera to the iPad. If he's still looking for a gooseneck mount check out a used gooseneck mic mount at Music-Go-Round on 16th Ave. Should be cheap. An ikMultimedia iPad holder Should be available that attaches to the gooseneck somehow.

These are all great ideas. And I'm delighted that the kid thought of pairing iPads, since this is his project, not mine, and he's the one who needs to figure it out and come up with the ideas. I love everyone's ideas, and will be approaching him with those socratrically.
One thing, Dub. If you move back to Cedar Rapids, you'll discover that Music-Go-Round doesn't exist in Cedar Rapids anymore.
Another thing is that Doug is mailing the kid an iPad clamp, via my address. More evidence that rough tough old Doug is actually a really nice guy in real life.

...More evidence that rough tough old Doug is actually a really nice guy in real life. What? You needed evidence?

We've got evidence, but there are those here that have never met the guy. There are also people he might shoot at.
