me not being very much of a girl, I felt safe in the self-immolation. Sorry to have included you. I shouldn't have allowed for and mistaken inference that you are as stupid as me.
you idiot.

I'm not even sure it's a matter of intelligence. One of the unintended consequences of feminism is that young women are now free to be as yobbish as young men. The late-night hoots and hollers of Thirsty Thursday now cover the vocal range from baritone to coloratura soprano, and my mother's "Were you raised in a barn?" might be addressed to yahoos of any sex.

There is just so much cultural/social baggage that infuses this area, its hard to get one's head above water.
At the national level, its hard to find any political leader who will say anything other than "universal college education is an American birthright". The suggestion that we spend anything less than 110% of current Federal subsidies for higher education is met with immediate accusations that the suggester is calling for every young person to spend their career shoveling coal in a mine or picking cotton in a field.
For better or worse, people are catching on to the scam. People leaving college with six-figure debt and no career prospects are wondering if they should continue to trust the people who told them this was such a good idea. Even those with once-reliable "STEM" degrees are finding their career prospects undercut by lower-cost immigrants, not to mention the reality that "IP" type work is in many ways the easiest type to outsource.
We are in the present moment witnessing the collapse of another inflationary bubble, but this one is more concealed. When the NASDAQ tanked in 2000, it was obvious for all to see. When the housing market collapsed in 2007, that was also obvious to see. What is collapsing now, however, is the value of college degrees, and there is no index for that. But the collapse is just as real as the NASDAQ and housing collapses that preceded it, its just that there is no commonly available index for measuring it.
Locally, we have a school bond issue coming up for a vote in a few weeks. One of the provisions is the creation of a "technology center" at one of the mid-town high schools. Years ago, we would have called it "vocational training" or "technical training". Hell, we used to have "Technical High School", but they closed that in the 80's. Anyway, the sense I have is that people are somewhat grudgingly accepting the notion that universal four-year college isn't the social panacea we were told, but only for someone else's kids. There's a reason they aren't building the new technology center in West Omaha (where all the money is at). Alas.
Ultimately, every market will be vindicated. If we try to create through subsidies/incentives/whatever the condition that something costs less than it is worth, we will get more of it than we need, and its value will eventually collapse. The Gods of the Copybook Headings and all that.

Maybe so, but they can do it backwards and wearing heels.

There are lots of women in trades here, but they are still heavily outnumbered. Young women still have way less of a chance to find out if they are inclined that way. On top of that, the trades are still a hotbed of the lowest of lowbrow male behaviour, and if the girls can't take it, or don't want to take what amounts to pretty continuous harassment, they don't stay.
