Just got my retirement application, retirement estimate, W4 withholding form, life insurance election form from our HR dept.
In a few weeks I'll attend a retirement seminar--for the second time.
I think I am also supposed to go ahead and file for SS now ahead of my Dec. 31 retirement.
Not at all worried about the financials but after 43 years I do wonder what comes next. My boss suggested I attend a session on phased retirement last week--work half time, retire half time collect half pay and half pension. Too late as I've saved up about $10K worth of annual leave I would have to forfeit if I don't go out 12/31. But there's a ton of things they still don't know how to do that need to get done so either I'll answer a lot of questions or they'll have to pay me to come in and consult.

I am sure between your former employer and some academic/non profit org you can get something to keep you busy. Congrats on the impending achievement!

Yeah, you sign up for SS up to 90 days before you want it but it's a pretty quick thing on-line.
You'll be surprised at how little time you have for work once you're retired. In my case they hired 4 guys to replace me but I had left pretty good notes, I think and didn't get a lot of questions after I left. Of course, you seem to enjoy your job, which I didn't, so maybe you can stay close to the people anyway.
My company was getting rid of lots of people and had hired a consulting group. I got a call asking if there was anything I needed help with but I told the guy the plan and he said, "OK you have it handled then. I hope I can come up with a plan like that when the time comes". It has mostly worked.
Best wishes for a long and happy retirement, and healthy too.

I will be 4 months behind you. I don't plan to take SS for a couple years yet and still not sure what I will do in retirement other than continue to make music. But I'm moving on none the less. Technically, I have 185 more calendar days left, but only 116 working days. Next month I officially notify HR that I'm retiring. My boss already knows as we've been doing transition planning for a few months already.

"pay me to come in and consult"
Ding! We have a winner!
Seriously, I would love to work where you (used to) work.

My boss already knows as we've been doing transition planning for a few months already. Since I'm only working two days a week I have like 16 days left. And only 12 or so before the holiday party so I'd better light a fire under the band to start selecting music and learning/rehearsing. Our ace guitarist wants to do Ramblin' Man. No doubt he can do all those Dickie Betts licks but there's lots of piano and other guitar parts.

That's great Dick. Your retirement will be well deserved.
I plan to retire December 31, 2015, except that I have one case I may need to wrap up after that, and I'll want to do a little work for a year and a bit for financial reasons. I used to think I'd have mixed emotions but now I don't at all. I've already been doing what I do for 35 years. It's time to do something different.

...but after 43 years ... 43...! Wow. Will retire after another 29 paydays (monthly), and I will only have been in my present job for 29 years. Wife is six years behind me, so I'll be chief cook and bottle-washer for a while.

Yeah. Whatever else retirement may bring, it will mean doing more dishes and housecleaning.

Great news, Dick. You're going to enjoy this. Still sending prayers and healing thoughts your way. Fiddlerina and I want to spend way more time with you "one of these first days."

Congrats to the incipient retirees -- rest & relaxation & new pursuits (or more time with old pursuits) are well deserved
I will need to work well beyond 65, assuming there is work to be had for an old guy. I can retire in 10 years, 8 months, and 25 days, but who's counting?

Four years and two months left in the military, and that will take me to 30. Yeah, yeah, I know I said I was leaving twice before, but the Army kept dangling carrots. There are also conceivable scenarios that would see me leave before then.
After that, I go find another career for about 18 years or so, and ultimately hang it all up around 70. I'd love to retire when I left the Army, but that's not reasonable with a 7 year old running around.

So a question for you retirees: How much thought did you put into retiring at 65 instead of 62, in terms of getting full social security at 65? Is that a big deal? Looking into my future, here.

Do the math and see where the catch up date on money is from 62 to 65.
