I don't know what they should do. The Grand Jury heard the evidence and it's their job to make the decision.
But, why on earth schedule the announcement for 8:00 PM? Why not 8:00 AM? Did they purposefully pick a time that could possibly lead to the most trouble, whether in anger or celebration? Supposedly there is concern over "crowd reaction". If so, why pick a time that is most suitable for a crowd reaction when you could pick a time that is likely to promote a more subdued reaction.
8:00 PM: Best potential for a large crowd in front of the courthouse and in the downtown area. Enough time for some "lubrication" to pass the wait. Nighttime with a lot of night to go.
8:00 AM: Early morning. Nice and sunny out (or, at least, daylight). Much smaller crowd in front of the courthouse and downtown area. No time to lubricate.

One of the law-enforcement analysts on CNN opined that they know it's going to be no indictment or a low-level charge, and they are putting defensive measures into place. Somebody said the National Guard was moving to secure the building the prosecutor's office is in.

I think it would be a big mistake not to charge him. Even if he were ultimately proved innocent, there should be a public trial so the facts and testimony can be thoroughly weighed in the most transparent way possible.

I agree with Peake.
I think anytime a cop fires his gun (not at the range) he should face a jury.

So far, some black leaders are certainly being helpful in keeping the situation from becoming violent: [congressman Lacy Clay] "Even though the police murdered Michael Brown in cold blood and the crooked justice system refused to bring justice, stay peaceful". Yeah, that will work.

The split screen (Obama on one side telling us not to riot, Ferguson street scenes with tear gas flying and fires burning on the other) was iconic.

Obama was good, though. Admit it.
(but, yes, the split screen business during his talk was ironic, and, forgive me, funny.)

I agree with Peake. I think anytime a cop fires his gun (not at the range) he should face a jury. So, every time a cop fires his gun, he is put on paid administrative leave for the two years it would take to resolve his case in front of a jury? Which means hiring another cop to replace the one you are paying to await trial? Your plan would double the cost of maintaining a police force, which would mean raising taxes, which would eventually end up being paid entirely by the poor, as it is on the shoulders of the very poorest that all taxes eventually fall. Why do you hate the poor?

What irks me is every TV channel has total coverage of the same teargas canisters and cops circling around. BUT NOBODY IS FORECASTING THE WEATHER ! ! !

Apparently a song about it already, seen on Facebook. Trouble is the premise is wrong.
Patterson Hood
I often walk around unable to figure out how to express what's really on my mind. I don't know any answers or solutions but at least I was able to articulate the question.
What It Means
He was running down the sidewalk when they shot him in the back They shot him in the back and he fell dead in his tracks They say they investigated but we all know how that goes like in those old TV shows, the cops should remain heroes and if you say it wasn't racial when they shot him in the back well I guess that means that you ain't black, it means that you ain't black I mean I guess we have Obama and you can choose where to eat but you don't see too many white kids lying bleeding on the street
It's some town in Missouri but it could be anywhere it could be right here on Ruth Street, in fact it has happened here and it's happened where you're sitting, wherever that might be it happened last weekend and it will happen again next week and when they turned him over, they were surprised there was no gun I mean he must have stolen something, or else why would he have run and they'll spin it for the anchors on the television screen so we can shrug and let it happen without asking what it means What it means?
Then I guess there was protesting and some looting in some stores and someone was reminded that they ain't called colored folks no more I mean we try to be politically correct when we call names but what's the point of post-racial when the old prejudice remains and that guy who killed that kid down in Florida standing ground is free to beat up on his girlfriend and wave his brand new gun around while some kid is dead and buried and laying in the ground with a pocket full of Skittles
Astrophysics at our fingertips and we're standing at the summit some kid with a joystick lands a rocket on a comet We're living in an age where limitations are forgotten the outer edges can move and dazzle us but at the core there's something rotten When we're running towards a darkness of prejudice and fear we trust science only as long as it tells us what we want to hear we want our truths all fair and balanced as long as our notions lie within it There's no sunlight in our assholes and our heads are stuck up in it and our heroes may be rapists who watch us sleeping from our screens but don't look to me for answers cuz I don't know what it means What it means?

One of the craziest scenes I saw last night was a protester carrying an injured woman through the the police lines. She was loaded in a police car and they sped her to the hospital. One second rocks and bottles are flying at them and the next police are expected to help an injured citizen. At least the rocks and bottles stopped flying towards the police for a few minutes.
