KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- The smokestack on the site of the former Gibson Guitar factory on Parsons Street in Kalamazoo will not be destroyed.
An initial inspection of the aging structure suggested that the collapse of the smokestack was imminent and that it should be demolished. Late Thursday word arrived that a second inspection found that was not the case and that it was not in danger of falling down.
Restoration options may now be considered, including possibly deconstructing the top part of the chimney and putting it back together again. No action is expected to be taken until this summer.
It is a nice piece of history, to be sure, but what should a community spend to preserve it? The factory itself is not far behind the decline of the smokestack, although Heritage Guitars still functions in a part of the building.
My daughter's boyfriend, when discussing this little news item, said that most people think of Nashville when they think of Gibson guitars. He no longer things that.

The original Gibson factory, Heritage guitars is in there now, and a little of the later addition on the left. A top view, you can see the chimney's shadow.

That is a butt ugly building. I can see why they want to save it.

That is a butt ugly building. I can see why they want to save it. We have a mania here to preserve any building that is of any age at all. Doesn't matter how ugly or useless it is. Gets a bit ridiculous.

Yup, and I'm convinced that if "GIBSON" had never been inlaid in the smokestack it would not be discussed at all, it would be down.

I was in that building once, probably around 1971. I had driven from Chicago to pick up some banjo parts. They had an historical display in the lobby with some guitars dating back to Orville. Pretty cool. The building may be historically significant for Kalamazoo but it certainly isn't for guitar aficionados.

The windows need sorting out but otherwise I think the building looks pretty good for a factory.
