It has been a weepy few days on the BBC. It is very affecting to see and hear survivors' pained recollections.

A lot of remarkable stories coming out while there are still survivors to tell the stories.
Should always be remembered that the concentration camps were not liberated by Stalin or Roosevelt or Churchill, but by common foot soldiers. The Russian soldiers who liberated Auschwitz later shook hands with American soldiers when they met in Berlin.

Today, January 28, marks 70 years since my 13-year-old mother and her 41-year-old mother walked out of the gates of Auschwitz after nine-months of forced labor, beatings, starvation, torture, death, and living hell. My mother always referred to this day as the one on which she was reborn.

Whenever I see/hear stories like this, I can't help but think what a strange species man is; that anything like this could ever be possible.

Today, January 28, marks 70 years since my 13-year-old mother and her 41-year-old mother walked out of the gates of Auschwitz after nine-months of forced labor, beatings, starvation, torture, death, and living hell. My mother always referred to this day as the one on which she was reborn. Whenever I read about someone who went through this I'm just amazed. Even your few lines gave me pause, Howard. Out here in Iowa we don't have many Jewish people, so running into a survivor is rare. I had that opportunity once, I believe in 1994. Recalling what he said, and the way he was able to move on in life moves me to this day. Like Marshall says, it makes one wonder about our species. We can be wonderful and caring. And we can be hellishly cruel.
