I've been sick as a dog the past 2 weeks and I haven't played guitar, worked in the shop, or done much of anything other than sleep for nearly 2 weeks. But I'm feeling a little better today so I decided to finish a project I started 3 weekends ago before I got sick. The "Build Your Own Clone" 5 knob compressor. It's a clone of the Ross compressor with an additional tone knob, and a blend knob which will blend the straight signal and the compressed signal. The remaining 3 knobs are Attack, Sustain, and Level. It sounds amazing. It's really really clean with lots of variation on how much sustain you need. The Attack knob is very subtle but you can hear it affecting your pick attack slightly. What a fun project. You get the circuit board, case, and a bag of parts. Then you go online to download the instructions, get out your multimeter to make sure you're reading those resister code properly and go to it! The board as I'm soldering in the parts. It just barely fits in the box And here's the outside What a fun project. Next up is a clone of the Zen Drive overdrive.

So, I'm not so bright. What the heck is that thing? Is it something that's attached to a guitar?

Where'd you get it?

So, I'm not so bright. What the heck is that thing? Is it something that's attached to a guitar? It goes on my pedal board and is the first pedal in my pedal train. A compressor increased the volume of quiet notes and limits the volume of louder notes. It's great for chicken' picken'contry guitar and it's really good for doing volume swells becasue it makes your notes sustain much longer. It's from Build Your Own Clone pedalsI recommend them over Mammoth pedal kits because they supply very clear instructions. Mammoth doesn't even give you the circuit board layout unless you register for their forums (which takes weeks or even months).

VI:
This is a video I made as a private message to a buddy of mine "Bob" so it's not really ready for prime time. But it shows my pedal board and the use of my old compressor (which went belly up) and some other effects and two digital delays to build some Allan Holdsworth style volume swells.
You can jump to 2:11 if you just want to hear the music.
And, just for comparison to show how far I have to go, this is the original song.

I jumped to 2:11, and that was not what I expected at all. But very cool, though! And I get why people would use one. Thanks for letting me know.

I'm starting to understand drlj's consternation with the language of Indiana. Around here, we inflate bicycle tires. There is no point in blowing them up.

You call that a compressor? This is a compressor!

Nice project. I have a Brother Label maker but you could mark the knob functions using Letraset.

you can also personalize the knob function terms ie: Attack= Guts, Sustain= Longevity, Level= Zeel.

I need me one of those. I've always wanted a circuit board, a case, and a bag of parts. I wouldn't have a clue about what to do with any of those things but I'd look cool.

I need to go back to futzing with the pedal models I have in the Ipad. Was having lots of run with them. I really don't know how they compare to the real thing, but they're a lot cheaper. It's a whole other part of the dark side that's a lot of fun.

Cool effects, Greg. That's one of those things you've got to be careful with, I'd think. You could noodle with that setup for far too long.

WTG Greg. That's on my to-do list for this summer as well. B.Y.O.C is an interesting hang-out for sure. Since I don't "play out" I'll probably start with a fuzz box instead of a compression pedal. The only guy that gets irritated with my sound is me so far. Totally cool, my friend!

Thanks for turning us on to BYOC Greg. They have a kit for one of the coolest pedals Boss ever made, the SG-1 Slow Gear.

Ditto the thanks for that Greg. The studio-type parallel compressors with the mix knob seem to be slowly gaining in the pedal market and this is the first I've seen of one in a DIY configuration. Just may have to make this my first compressor pedal ever.

I like the idea of being able to do whatever finish and or graphics on the casing. BYOCs site has a gallery of customer finished projects, some quite worthy efforts. Being the grandsons have pulled me back to the dark side I will need to get pedals and a amp. I may break down and just buy a Quilter Aviator 2 X 10. But I have been toying with the idea of building my own Fender style tweed amp. Although I would probably not buy a Mojotone kit, as they are pricey, but their site is interesting and shows what could be made.
