Yeah, I'd like to see you lean it to the gunwale without going over.

That's probably harder to do than it looks. At pro level, they do it with tugboats.

I leaned hard into the gunwale But that's not what's strange about this tale I knew I was about to be pummelled Because "gunwale" (turns out) rhymes with "tunnel"

He is really good. Most people can't even keep a straight line with the paddle on one side.

I think there is something compelling and fascinating about things like this...things where obviously expert canoe-manship is really important to this guy, but, really who else cares?
Is the assembled throng just politely going along with this, or are they fellow canoe-handling enthusiasts who truly appreciate all the subtleties involved? This comes to mind because I had a similar thought at my Taijutsu testing session on Saturday. I mean, everyone there was deadly serious about things, but to an outside observer, it was nothing but a bunch of grown men jumping around in their pajamas. It was just overwhelmingly absurd.
That being said, that is some mighty fine canoeing, right there.

He is really good. Most people can't even keep a straight line with the paddle on one side. I can. But that's about it. I've always paddled a canoe from the back. I got one with a middle seat (I know, this guy was on his knees) and found it too hard to control, so went back to a regular canoe where I could paddle from my regular spot. What this guy's doing is pretty amazing, but I wonder if he ever takes his boat out to go fishing.

Okay, not to sound like I know what I'm talking about, but I used to be in those canoe groups. The St. Croix Canoe Company existed before the internet, so there's nothing left except what's in my garage and a few old business cards. (Not totally true. Some guy in New Mexico tracked me down a few months ago when he bought one of my canoes used and found my name on it. It's 25 years old and probably one of the last ones I built.)
That guy is paddling a short solo canoe, 12-14 feet. Yes, he's on his knees but there's a seat in the middle that he puts his butt on sometimes. Butt on the seat, knees on the bottom is the most comfortable position for me, but knee pads help. That guy has a neoprene sheet on the canoe bottom for comfort and grip.
Todd, if you're solo in a tandem canoe, sit backwards on the bow seat. The canoe is symmetrical, it doesn't know its the front from its back. If you sit in the stern the bow rides too high and will catch the wind.
Jeff, you're right, nobody else gives a shit. The people watching are as overwhelmingly absurd as the guy doing it. I can do maybe half what he does, but knowing I can support myself on a high brace is comforting in the middle of a storm in the middle of a lake in the middle of the BWCA. And I'm sure you're very graceful jumping around in your pajamas.
I searched for a picture that I can't find (again, pre-internet) of a woman in a canoe with 2/3 of her body stretched out horizontally over the water, supporting herself on her outstretched paddle. Amazing picture, but you'll have to take my word on it.

Dang. I should have watched that video closer. I didn't realize my head was that big. Mine would be too if I could handle a canoe like that.
