Well my mind has certainly changed. I thought the Pope was a bit screwy but this eliminates any doubt that I might have had.

An encyclical is like a fatwa, right? How many U.S. Catholics follow the one against birth control? Considering the Catholic church's historical batting average on science, yup, that's funny right there.

Is kind of strange to have Pope say that man is more powerful than God.

Well we've all seen how much weight his views on gay marriage have carried.

An encyclical is like a fatwa, right? Um, no, not really.

If I had the ear of the pope, I'd ask him why "climate" doesn't rhyme with "primate".

Man, does this scream for a Tom Lehrer-ish tune. "Even The Pope Believes In Gaia!"

I am a bit puzzled by this thread. Are you saying the Pope is somehow wrong to have an opinion about man's stewardship of the earth or is this just anti-Catholic bias in general?

Not anti-Catholic, I'm just puzzled by any religious leader that publicly states that man is more powerful than God.

Not anti-Catholic, I'm just puzzled by any religious leader that publicly states that man is more powerful than God. I have read not just this article but several others about the Pope's possible coming encyclical. It has not appeared yet, to my knowledge, so everything being said is, of course, speculation. However, no where does it even remotely suggest that the Pope has said, or believes, that man is more powerful than God. That is a product of your own imagination and , I might add, a colossal heap of bullshit.

Because if you're going to engage in argument-by-dictionary, you need to start with the right dictionary? I don't know why I bother.

Jeff, Bruce, and I are about the only ones here that will cop to being Catholic. The Pope isn't wrong for having an opinion. It's just funny that alarmists are suddenly overjoyed that the Pope is going to declare them right. Like the guy who's just a single, celebate old religious white guy who doesn't know shit about marriage when the question of gay marriage comes up is suddenly a scientific authority when it looks like the encyclical might support them.

Depends on which single, etc. cleric and how smart and well-informed he is. Much of my ethical/aesthetic analytical equipment was upgraded and tuned by a single, celibate, middle-aged Jesuit. And some of his colleagues I wouldn't have trusted for directions to the cafeteria.
