Susie Burke sings my favorite version of Song of Bernadette, and David Surrette plays an acoustic guitar back up that is stunning. I can't find it on the web. It's on their CD Lucky Stars.

Keely Smith! Mary Flower! And for Minnesota songbirds, Connie Evenson-- BTW, Marshall, how 'bout this for a non-big-band reading of the song? On the matter of a "freshening up" of classic-song arranging, the arrangements for Dylan's Sinatra debacle are the only things that prevent the album from collapsing into a black hole of complete artistic failure. BTW-II: Guy Lombardo charts hardly represent anything like a high point. My father always called him "Guy Lumbago." Quite nice, Russell. The brushes are a little to shooshy. Jorgenson might be a little showy. But still pretty tasty. The fiddle work is dead on. The vocal is very sweet. All in all I give it a 9.5 out of 10. Very Nice.

"Caravan" is particularly cluttered. That Caravan is sort of wretched. I've heard really nice bluegrassifications of it. That ain't one of 'em. Back in the 70s, Jeff White was part of a band here in N. Indiana. They did a really nice take on it, though the recording of it is a little less than stellar. Here's a nice modern take on a standard.

As I recall, John & I once did a pretty nice and fun version of Caravan. At at picking session in Goshen, I believe. Do I have that correct, John? I really have very little interest in most of the so called American Songbook. All the old, worn out Rockers from Rod Stewart to Bob Dylan do. I would not listen to Frank Sinatra if you paid me. Tony Bennett I do like pretty well because he is ultra cool. I always liked Jennifer Warnes. Unlike Marshall, I would prefer instrumental versions of the tunes to the vocals if I did listen. Give me Jelly Roll, Fats, Big Bill, Blind Willie and Hank any day.

(I think Warnes might just be my favorite female singer) Without pondering too much, this would be my list of greatest female singers, based on how much pleasure I get out of hearing them sing almost anything: Eva Cassidy Bonnie Raitt Kate Rusby Aretha Linda Ronstadt Joni Mary Chapin Carpenter Heather Masse Prudence Johnson kd lang Drop Aretha from that list and it is a good one. Masse is great live. If you get a chance to see her solo or with the Jennys, don't pass it up.

How about if I replace her with Sarah Vaughan?

Marshall,
You ought to youtube some Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellies. They're following in the footsteps of Michigan bands going back to New Heavenly Blue, The Bluefront Persuaders, and Steppin' In It -- doing modern takes on old standards.
If you look on my fb page you'll see a video of Lindsay Lou and Eric Skye doing Summertime.
