Mid-Westerners put the Civil in back in Civil Disobedience. They don't burn- they quench.

It was bound to happen. It's why I have long been an advocate of mandatory registration and background checks for Super-Soaker owners.

Even though I have my Conceal Carry Permit, I will leave my squirtgun at home should I ever make it back to IJam. I wouldn't want to make all my more liberal friends nervous that I might suddenly go amok and hose all of you down.

Pedal Pubs operate in downtown and commercial areas where the street traffic is rather noisy anyway, big trucks and food vans block traffic all the time and Pedal Pub Pilots only allow passengers to leave their seat at designated stops. We had regular visits from one of the Pedal Pubs in Dinkytown, never a problem, in fact if you didn't see them you would never know they were there.

I had never heard of Pedal Pubs before. Are they a roving bar or do groups of people rent the whole thing. What's the purpose? Is there a bartender or is it BYOB? Basically, I don't get it.

They started in Europe, and have been imported here. Usually, it's an office gang of 12-15 people that rent one for an outing. The driver (who works for the Pedal Pub outfit) steers, the riders pedal the thing. At first they were not allowed to drink while aboard, but Mpls law was altered to permit it (except, of course, the driver). They are allowed only on certain specified routes at specified times. They usually travel along fairly scenic riverfront streets, stopping at pubs along the way for, um, hydration.

Brilliant. So, instead of the pub crawl..... Be a fun thing to do, and nobody drives.

I think these losers have too much time on their hands. Why don't they just volunteer for community service now and save us all the court costs.

I'm at a loss to understand what anyone finds so offensive about those things.
Is all the sturm and drang just sarcastic?

I've heard that the squirt gun armed protestors may escalate to the more terroristic use of frozen water...

I'm at a loss to understand what anyone finds so offensive about those things. Is all the sturm and drang just sarcastic? I think it was just a stupid prank, done as a lark, maybe with some ethanol involved. But it was pretty stupid, and (I think) worthy of citations. Here is the latest: Five of the six cyclists arrested Saturday for allegedly spraying squirt guns and throwing water balloons at PedalPub revelers in downtown Minneapolis were charged Tuesday with misdemeanors. A sixth person arrested after the attacks was released without charges. Charged in the three attacks — the third of which was thwarted by PedalPub passengers who were also off-duty Burnsville police officers — were John Davis Rock, 24; Kurtis Wayne Johnson, 31; Jason Leonard Carlton, 42; Francis Wayne Bellanger, 26, and Mark William Dean, 31. Rock and Johnson are charged with two misdemeanors — fifth-degree assault and disorderly conduct — and the other three with disorderly conduct. All were released shortly after being booked into the Hennepin County jail over the weekend on $78 bond apiece. Two of the people-powered, 16-seat vehicles were hit Saturday afternoon in the Warehouse District. In the first attack, the cyclists rode to the front of the PedalPub and squirted the driver in the face. In the second, cyclists approached on both sides, squirted passengers with water pistols and hit one woman in the back of the head with a water balloon. A potential third attack at 4th Street and 1st Avenue N. was thwarted when PedalPub passengers who were off-duty cops spotted the cyclists’ approach, jumped off and turned the tables on the cyclists, restraining them until Minneapolis police arrived. In the Twin Cities and elsewhere, “I Hate the Pedal Pub” sentiment has surfaced on social media, with complaints about noise, traffic blocking and public drunkenness. A local Facebook page opposing PedalPubs has thousands of “likes.”

We had something like that around here a few years ago. I don't remember the "pub" part, but some guy bought some of those pedal cars and for a fee you could rent one and tool around the Old Market (the part of town where "Nowhere Span" was recorded a few years ago, BTW).
Haven't seen them for a few years. Maybe the public lost interest.
Anyway, what I was thinking is that I'm assuming the areas where Pedal Pubs are operating in MSP are similar. Its not like there are drunk and obnoxious people riding these down quiet residential streets, right?

We have something like that in Warsaw except that you just buy the beer and take it home and drink it in front of the TV while Jeopardy! is on. Nobody ever gets squirted. That might add an element of surprise to the endeavor.

There are some routes that include residential areas, and I have heard of complaints from some neighbors. I don't think it's so much when they are pedaling, but when they stop at a pub and leave from a pub. NE Minneapolis has a lot of old-fashioned corner taverns nestled in right among houses (think Green Bay or Milwaukee) and while the bars and houses can co-exist most of the time, a gang of folks with a few beers in them can make a fair amount of noise.

I'd like to join in the condemnation of the squirters, but we need to be judicious in passing judgment. Let us not be without compassion. It's a slippery slope and all fall short. Honesty compels me to admit that in the Mendota Sweet Corn Festival parade one of the floats occupied by graduates attending a class reunion once soaked the city council and the mayor in the reviewing stand. But, hey, the mayor was a member of our class.
Beer, super-soakers and water balloons have been banned from the parade floats ever since. As my wife likes to remind me, "You went and screwed it up for everybody else again, didn't you?"
