And here I sit in Eau Claire at my Dad's hospital bedside. He took a sharp downward turn yesterday when the NH staff found his O2 levels very low and him having breathing trouble. They called my sister, who approved transport to the Mayo hospital branch here, where X-rays showed pneumonia that he is very unlikely to survive. One whole lung is occluded and half of the other is, too. He is not responsive, but they seem to have him comfortable, on oxygen, of course. My sister went home around 11, I elected to stay in his room, where there is a couch.
We are looking at pallitive care, at this point -- although until daybreak and beyond we won't know whether that will be here or back at his NH.
He's had a good run, he's 96, they assure us that they will keep him comfortable and I guess that is all we can ask.
Anyway, remember this day for being the original Memorial Day, from Civil War times.

Update, not five minutes after I posted the above, I left his room to get a glass of water and use the restroom, and when I returned, a nurse was checking on him, and he had passed.
My Mom died the same way, in a tiny slice of time when no one happened to be in the room. I hear from the med folks that that is very common.
RIP, Benjamin M. Hammond.

So sorry, Bill. Some call pneumonia the old man's friend for just this reason. It sounds like a peaceful passing.

Bill - my deepest condolences, and an embrace to the entire Hammond clan.
A long, full life, but we only get one Mom and Dad and it is terribly painful to say goodbye.

Maybe I'll use Bill's sad day to announce the continuation of life.
On Thursday, my daughter gave birth to another baby boy; Alexander Ferguson. The only pictures are photo studio owned, so i can't post them. I'll get to see the babe in a couple days.
