The local fireworks got wet and wouldn't work last night so we started back home. Saw some fireworks going up down by the harbor so drove down there and watched them instead. Just someone's personal stash I guess but not bad. Wasn't home 10 seconds when the storm hit big time. Just made it.
Nothing's ever easy. So, my back door, or one corner of it, got broke somehow. It's made of PVC, I think, but PVC glue wouldn't stick to it so maybe not. Went to Ace this morning to get some corner brackets to screw it together. They've rearranged the hardware section so it took me awhile but I found some. Now, I had a $5 off next purchase card so I picked up some Groundclear for the driveway too. Went to check out, purchase has to be over $35 and I only have $25. OK, I'll find something else, I'm out of lightbulbs so I pick up $12 of lightbulbs. Back to checkout, the bulbs are on sale and it has to be regular priced items. Ugh, OK, let me think. Then the girl looks at the card and it isn't good until the 8th. Fine. I paid for the stuff , $37, and came home. Got the door screwed back together and we'll see how long that lasts.

Last night we watched 3 fireworks shows from our house. We could see Huachuca City, Sierra Vista, and Tombstone and could occasionally see what must have been Benson. And there was lightning. And there were at least 3 groups of people nearby making their own racket. And a lot of barking dogs. Luckily it has been wet, so we were not too worried about some idiot starting a fire. We got almost an inch of rain overnight, so yard work is out today. Guitar is in.

Good day, I got up early to watch the pretty-interesting British Grand Prix, then went back to bed for an hour. Now it's off to brunch somewhere, and some errands, then I'm picking up Babzi for our first outing to the new St. Paul Saints stadium, drawing rave reviews for its architecture, vibe, food and drink. (Plus free parking and $5 admission!)

Somebody in the neighborhood had some really big-noisy fireworks, so the usual rattle of crackers was punctuated by window-rattling concussions. About 1:30, one seemed to go off right outside our bedroom window, or at least close enough that I could see a cloud of smoke. Some scamp had dragged a Dumpster from the alleyway into the street and detonated inside it. It was still smoking when the cops showed up a couple minutes later, and finally a fire crew arrived and hosed it down. Two police cruisers and a pumper truck and about a half hour of attention from the assembled personnel. Big bangs continued for another hour or so, and I could have sworn I could hear them receding toward downtown. I picture a gaggle of young assholes tossing supercrackers into yards and running away laughing. Don't know why they'd head downtown, though--the bars were closed. But then, they were probably already drunk. The joys of life in a college neighborhood. On the other hand, C. can walk to work, and our immediate neighbors are friendly, if feckless. (Who knew you could major in Hacky Sack and skateboard.)

Last night was the fifth night of bloody fireworks in Owen Sound. Each time Morgan goes into near hysterics and pants and shakes for an hour after the last one. It is illegal to let off any more fireworks for the next month without a permit and if the drunken child down the street does it again I'm calling the cops. He specializes in fireworks at midnight. That said, I hope you guys all had a fabulous 4th. Lovely summer day. Dog bath day. Dog groom day. She says she hates it but she loves it really.

South of Cleveland for one more day. The Harmony got a workout as a bunch of us artist/musicians got together after the show Friday night. Saturday morning it was about 65 degrees as I was setting up. The guitar was in its case behind my booth. It was sunny, but being so cool,I didn't think anything about it-- but it wasn't the temperature--it was the fact that there was significant moisture in the air (I'm in a deep river valley) and there was a great disparity in temperature. In less than two hours time, moisture built up inside the case and clouded the finish in a few places on the top.I'm hoping some McGuire's will buff it out when I get home.

A typical 4th of July for me. Spent about three grand on fireworks, got drunk and shot them all off in about three minutes.
Sometimes I wonder if it's worth it. But, it's a tradition, so best not to think too much.

But, it's a tradition, so best not to think too much. You could have fed and clothed a whole bunch of poor children with $3000,but I hope you at least let them watch the fireworks.

I was thinking I could have given the boat trailer a cool paint job, but, yes, I suppose I could have fed some poor kids. A custom glitter and flames paint job for the boat trailer would be cool, though.

I would consider doing more for poor children if they came with their own money. That, and if I could be more certain that people would be aware of my philanthropy.

Back from the Saints-RedHawks game --what a SWEET ballpark CHS Field is! And it was a perfect night for a ballgame -- mid-80s, nice breeze, our seats were in the sun at first but then shade moved in as the sun made its rounds. Idyllic place. Good food and lots of craft beers, too -- I had a Summit EPA and an Alaskan Amber, plus a bratwurst made by standout local chef Lenny Russo.
The Saints displayed some spectacular defensive plays and strong closer pitching to hold off Fargo-Moorhead 3-2.
I am not a huge baseball fan, but with this classy, fun, affordable option now only a 10-minute drive away, I sure could become one.
