A couple of nights ago Penn Jillette of Penn & Teller was on The Nightly Show. I noticed that he had lost a LOT of weight. My first thought was "I hope he's OK". But it turns out that he did this on purpose because his blood pressure was getting so bad. He's 6' 7" tall and weighed 330 pounds. Apparently, he went on a 900 calorie a day vegan diet (down from a 3000 calorie per day diet). One pound is about 2000 calories so he was losing a pound a day or more for 100 days. The change is pretty intense. This isn't the most flattering photo of him, he looked a lot better on the nightly show. But Holy Cow! 105 pounds in 100 days!? That's amazing.

Magic.
Seriously that's enormous willpower. And probably risky.

Apparently, he went on a 900 calorie a day vegan diet (down from a 3000 calorie per day diet). One pound is about 2000 calories so he was losing a pound a day or more for 100 days. The change is pretty intense. One pound is about 3500 calories. People with a lot of fat (330 pounds would qualify) can lose weight fast, but the rate quickly slows if they're eating at a moderate or sensible deficit, usually around a pound or two per week. Losing one pound a day is too much. And 900 calories a day is not enough for a woman to live on, much less a man. Losing weight too quickly, as Penn has, causes you to lose a lot of lean body mass along with fat. I agree with Evan that he doesn't look good. But he didn't look good in the before picture either. I don't think there's any winning for him on that count. Young people are better at the whole weight loss thing. When you get older and lose a significant amount of weight you realize that your skin is just an old meat sack. And when you take a lot of meat out of the sack, it looks kind of empty.

If he's not careful, he'll disappear.

I just hope they weren't holding Penn up as something to aspire to. A pound a day is not a realistic goal and would be nearly impossible for most people, and those that do meet the goal are putting their health at risk.

But it turns out that he did this on purpose because his blood pressure was getting so bad. Perhaps it was recommended to him by his doctor because the dangers of the health concern of blood pressure outweighed any danger of the wrong kind of tissue or the inability to keep it up as a lifestyle? www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/weight-loss/expert-answers/fast-weight-loss/faq-20058289I know Jim Shenk was told he was at serious risk from both high blood pressure and potential diabetes. The doctor was going to simply put him on meds to correct it. If Jim hadn't asked "Isn't there any alternative? Couldn't I change something? Exercise? Diet?" THEN the doctor said, "Sure. It's just that so few people take the recommendation that we just skip right to the meds." Jim went home, changed his diet and started to exercise. Lost a ton of weight (no, not 100 lbs, but at least 50) Next appointment all his numbers came back well within normal range.

I'm down a solid 5kg over the last five weeks--hospital food (not too bad but they are "light" meals), and zero beer. A few more weeks and I should easily be under 80.
Blood pressure is completely normal now, or even low. Upper is almost never in the 120s, usually in the low teens, and often in the 100s.

So, Jillette should have gotten into a horrible bike accident and lost the weight the proper way?

I doubt he can match this last week: (I had the nurse station print this out)
7/24 102/75 104/60 130/82 (this was the day that nurse that's the real hottie checked it) 101/67 100/59 110/66 101/67 7/31 113/66

Perhaps it was recommended to him by his doctor because the dangers of the health concern of blood pressure outweighed any danger of the wrong kind of tissue or the inability to keep it up as a lifestyle? Could have been, but after a little googling I wouldn't know what to believe. According to some accounts Jillette was on 6 medications and they weren't working very well so his doctor started talking about surgery, but the doc wanted him to lose 30 or 40 pounds first. Jillette decided to go for 100 lbs instead, wanting to avoid surgery altogether. He supposedly kept his doctor informed of his progress, but it didn't sound like the doctor was involved in the details. Jillette definitely lost a lot of weight. But it appears that he didn't really know how much he weighed at the beginning of his diet, how much he weighed at the end of his diet, or exactly when the diet started and ended. He's given details, but his story keeps changing. (Jillette supposedly has a very loose relationship with facts and the truth.) Also, since he was never counting calories, he never really knew how many calories he was eating before the diet or how many he was eating while on the diet. The diet itself was a mostly vegan diet. He also made sure he did not exercise at all while dieting to make sure that any weight lost would come from stored fat. (I've never heard of that one before. It makes absolutely no sense.) At this point he's lost 90, 100 or 105 pounds, and his 6 medications have been cut to 2. He hopes to be medication free in the future. And he's writing a book. A diet book. IMO it'll be the kind of book that will be a waste of money for most people with the potential of doing real harm to a select few. My takeaway from the whole thing is that he got a wakeup call from his doctor and lost a lot of weight but not in a sensible manner and is now promoting his book-to-be, stretching the truth and bending inconvenient facts. He's a mountebank.

Every single man I've ever tested has been a minimum of 130/82, and they average more like 160/100."
