Never took on lawyer-training. Teaching cats that random objects on a table are not toys is hard enough. I leave apologetics and litigation to the apologists and litigators. I belong to the research-and-analysis department. (There's a whole chapter in the departmental handbook about the impossibility of fixing invincible ignorance.) I thought I remembered you saying you taught rhetoric. I don't remember you mentioning belonging in analysis but I agree it was warranted. Too bad it failed you.

PS. Is the wench still in the slammer. I sure hope so. +1 Maybe by staying there she is witnessing her belief(s). Back in the 70s, at noon or so on the quadrangle at my uni, there would be one or two -people- who would be parading their belief in front of varying numbers of hecklers. On the surface, it looked like these people were preaching, and by doing so trying to convince the hecklers of the error of their ways and to convert. Miscommunication. If I've got this right, the preacher types were not preaching at all, not trying to convince/convert anyone--tho that's what it looked like. They were instead offering to god/jesus evidence of their belief, by standing among hecklers/nonbelievers and declaring that belief in the face of it all. I think that's called witnessing. The heckling could be quite creative. There was one fellow I remember, whose name I think was Urban Djin, who brought a guitar and who would follow around and sing backup to one of the preachers, repeating (and mis-repeating) lines and phrases that they had used (gospel-like), or making up weird responses to a preacher's supposed calls.

I don't much care what she does. She's an idiot who can't understand that if her beliefs do not allow her to perform the job she swore to perform, she should resign. Not simply decide that she can change the laws. People talk about judges making laws? They are actually paid to interpret them, that's the intent. She is not.
But no, I see it now. Shortly, she'll announce that she is going to resign from her position, so she can get out of jail, so she can be Trump's VP candidate! It's brilliant!
I do have to agree with John. Why is the entire country wasting time on this crap, when there is one major problem. And you know, if Donald Trump, instead of running around insulting minorities, actually said, "elect me and here is how I'll balance the budget and cut the debt," the man might get elected. But all he seems to be able to do is spew sound bites.
Arg. What a circus.

Right now, even though he took a pledge that he said he could later tear up, Trump is the most powerful potential independent candidate. Whether he has a D or an R in front of his name he's still Trump. I can't think of anything that would cause me to seriously consider voting for Trump. Wait . . . that's not true. Maybe if the Dems run Strom Thurmond. He was a Democrat before he was a Republican. He was an entertainer with extreme views that everyone thought was a joke. But slowly, people started warming up to him. They liked the way he talked tough, like a cowboy straight out of a movie, even if his grasp of the facts were a bit tenuous. And then when no one was looking, he shot to the top of the polls to become the most likely Republican nominee. Oh wait, that was Reagan. Trump, by contrast is . . . . Damn, there is no contrast. Except for the hair they're pretty much one and the same.

And as was pointed out to me way back in the 60s and 70s protests, the practice of civil disobedience requires accepting the punishment.

No, this country was founded by Christians. No, this country was founded by the persecuted and the paranoid. No, this country was founded by land owners, the privileged and the rich. No, this country was founded by men. No, this country was founded by illegal aliens. No, this country was founded by white supremacists. No, this country was founded by genocidist colonialists. All the above are true, including civil disobedience. To claim that it was only one factor is myopic, ignorant or dishonest.

I think that now that the idea of marriage no longer means anything we ought to truly embrace it. Marriage licenses should become like stock certificates, real ornate and decorative declarations of the ownership stake in the relationship. Maybe do like baseball cards and create collectible tokens of the marriages you've been in that can be traded at collector card shows. Have folks like the Duggers or Kardashians or those two women basketball players doing the circuit and signing autographs. And the next phase of reality TV can be based on how bizarre a marriage mob can one bring together offering big cash prizes for the group that can survive the longest. Municipalities issuing licenses can make a killing with the right marketing focus.
This Davis woman just doesn't get it.

I didn't draw any line and legally one no longer exists. It's only a matter of time. But think of the possibilities. You could buy your way into having your gerbil declared both Kanye West's husband and Bruce Jenner's ex-husband at the same time. The media bonanza is mind blowing.

Ah yes, no one can understand Americans, they're just so weird and unpredictable. I was actually under the impression that the U.S. was founded by an armed revolution, mainly for economic reasons, but someone here in Canada probably rewrote the history books, and you all just protested yourselves into being.

Yep an armed revolution is the biggest protest.
