The Jacksboro Highway is a road in Fort Worth that always seemed to hold a lot of trouble and mystique. I wrote a song about it.
Jacksboro Highway Blues © 2016 by David Hanners
Come listen to the story of a poor man led astray By the demons who haunt Jacksboro Highway There I met a girl named Opal; no gem but she would do Did not know she had a husband at home who loved her true He loved her true
Opal's man heard she'd been steppin', learned of her unfaithful ways Followed Opal to that nightclub on Jacksboro Highway Enraged, he charged at me, his blade barely missed my head Slipped and fell on his dagger; next I knew, he was dead He was dead
Told my tale to a jury but justice had the final say What I'd give for one last night on Jacksboro Highway Don't want to hear the warden's footsteps echo through Ellis One Just want to hear that angel chorus when I'm called home When I'm called home When I'm called home
