Talk to me about the meditating part, Tim. You just close your eyes for 5 mins, or do you do a more formal, Lotus-position regimen or what?
I am thinking about getting into Hatha Yogurt.

Alarm at 4:30, coffee with my wife (who leaves for work at 5:30) and a brisk morning walk, more coffee, check in here, 15 min. commute, arrive at the office at about 7:20, work officially begins at 8:00.

No alarm but I'm up by about 5:30 and in the office around 9:00, unless a scheduled matter requires that I be somewhere earlier. The morning hours are my walking and music time.

Recently--4:30: Minnie the Cat yowls that she wants something (probably just company, but Sunday it was to announce the capture of a mouse). I've been asleep for less than three hours. I close her in her room (my office) and go back to bed with Morning Edition on the radio. 5:30 or so: C. gets up to do some writing and I get to sprawl across that part of the bed not occupied by Eva the Cat. Morning Edition is still on the radio. 9:00: I'm finally really awake and Morning Edition is over. Time for coffee, CNN, cat-feeding. Computer is booted by 10:00 and I'm ready for another day of reading this (and other on-line stuff) instead of meeting my deadlines. The only time I need an alarm is when there's a plane to catch or a doctor or vet appointment to make. Distance from bed to desk: six longish paces.

I tend to wake up 1 hour and 15 minutes before my earliest commitment - so the actual get up time varies between 6:45 and 7:15 depending on the day. It takes me that much time to shower, dress, drink coffee, have breakfast, and walk the whole ten minutes down to school...I'm letargic in the morning!

Alarm goes off at 6:40, and I'm at my desk by around 8:00. I use my cell phone's alarm clock feature, so I'll usually pre-set two later alarms for 6:50 and 7:00. We're pretty flexible at my office though, so as long as I put in 8.5 hours a day, I can get in a little later (or earlier, which is rare) and it's no big deal.
The best part of my house's location? I only have 2 miles of driving in relatively non-congested city traffic to get to a gate entrance on the Redstone Arsenal (Army) side of Marshall Space Flight Center. From there it's 9 more miles of stress-free driving among very few other cars. (The majority of traffic comes in at other gates on the opposite side of the base).

I have options for my commute -- drive a couple miles north to pick up a freeway, or take a main-drag surface street almost to downtown, cross the river via freeway and I'm there.
Or I can split the latter approach in half and hop onto another freeway that delivers me downtown.
Assuming dry roads, it's takes between 10 and 15 minutes at the time I drive in. On the way home, at 3:30, there is more traffic everywhere, so it's more like 15 to 20 minutes, but not stressful, really.
When there is snow or ice to contend with, I always use Plan B, as it's plowed frequently cuz it's a bus route, and you don't get white-knuckly from having to contend with assholes going 70 miles per hour in their 4-by-4's in the middle of a blizzard.

J opined:
This describes me to a T. Today it was 7:45 and in teaching class by 9. Lest anyone think that this guitar thing is cush, I'll add that I am doing emails on my lunch hour and then I teach straight to 8pm. Then that AG review is due after that....
Pro music. What a party. -MM

When I worked at the Path lab the routine was something like this: Alarm 6.30, put coffee on, attempt to empty the dog while it was dark, freezing and raining sideways in the field out back, with dog staring at you like you were an idiot. Entreaties to hurry up and have a goddam dump not working. Retreat to warm, cosy home. Glare at dog settling down in warm, cosy basket. Drink coffee, eat toast and Marmite, put on wet-weather stuff, cycle to work and arrive, soaked, at 8.00. Stare down microscope for eight hours, return home and repeat.

Another insomniac like Doug here. I'm usually roaming the house by 4:30 or so. I do love my quiet time. I start work when it suits me and quit when it suits my customers...sometimes.

No alarm. Awake enough at about 8:30 to reach over for themos of coffee wifey left. Pour and stare at wall 'til hang-over receeds. Shower. At the office at 10 or so. Work 'til 9pm, or sometimes much later. Home at 10pm, shower and bed at 2am. Ain't life great.

My schedule changes every school year, this year I'm on the road by 7:00. I've never needed an alarm clock, I get up before it goes off, which is good because of Kim's alarm clock habit.
She sets the bedroom alarm clock 20 minutes or so ahead of real time, so after hitting the snooze button a few times, she gets up, and suprises herself at how much earlier it is than she thought. Drives me nuts.

I haven't used an alarm in over 20 yrs. I can't hear them. I know now they make alarms that move/vibrate to wake you up but I've adapted without them for so long that I don't want one. I usually can tell the time by the light that comes in my room. I wake about 6:50, put the coffee on, grab my guitar and play in the dark awhile. 7:30, shower and commute to work to get there about 8:15. Work is supposed to start at 8:00 but people don't get there til nearly 8:30 most of the time.

I exalt thee, Sir Chuckster. For being the first to report a 4:30 time.
My alarmsky went off @ 4:36 this morning. It varies, depending on how busy/stressed/tired I am. But 3 or 4 days a week it's afore 5:00.
