So.... I am in Cody, Wy for a few days having been to S.Dakota to see the mountain with the three Surveyors and the other guy and then Deadwood to say hello to Wild Bill. Today we went to the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. I never thought I would tire of looking at guns but today I did. Tomorrow we will drive the upper loop of Yellowstone having done the southern loop several years ago. We are hopefully getting out the door early in order to see some wildlife. Today we saw a newborn Mule Deer fawn in the middle of town. Hopefully momma is somewhere nearby.
What strikes me about wandering around the West is the sheer number of near decrepit, old Babyboomers (along with me, my sister, and BIL) blasting around on their shiny new Harleys or clogging the roads and parking lots with their motorhomes and campers. There are shit pots of them! They way outnumber the families with kids. If you have money to invest, find a nursing home and put your money there. It's interesting to see them wheel up on their Harleys or Gold Wings, park it, and limp into the motel. (Do not go gently into that Good Night)
We have gone from Daniel Boone coonskin caps and poodle skirts to sex, drugs and rock and roll to the 30+ year nose-to-the-grindstone and kids stint to motorcycles and road trips and all too soon to the inevitable nursing home or dirt nap.
Our time on this earth has reached Autumn and Winter- won't be long now.

Amen. I am surprised that we don't have several deaths at every one of our Patsy Cline shows. Both onstage and off.

Jane and I are in Salt Lake City. Tomorrow we start driving back to Maryland. We will be going through much of the same territory you have. I'm excited.

Wow. Why don't we all just jump in a big hole right now? Of course, we would have to get some younger people to dig it for us.

Nearly Decrepit Baby Boomers. Not a bad group. I saw them perform at an AARP convention in Philadelphia a few years back. They don't exactly take the stage with force, but they do get there even if it takes a little bit of time. Roscoe still plays like he can remember the songs and Luci can't sing like she used to, or hit the high notes anymore, but shifting everything to lower keys has helped. They can still rock out, as long as it is before 9PM. They don't allow the lighters held high finale anymore due to all of the oxygen tanks both in the audience and on the stage, but they do have the roadies pass out small, LED flashlights so the place still lights up. The light is brighter and harsher than all the lighters used to be but a lot safer. Hearing them do Don't Tell Me What To Do, Daddi-O would have set the toes a tappin' in the past, but a lot of the audience, sadly, was not able to actually hear it. Not clearly anyway. Still, it was a rousing evening of rebellion and fun and it was still over in time for most of the audience to catch the evening's episode of Matlock.

Don't miss the Crazy Horse Monument. It dwarfs Mt. Rushmore and is a more inspiring work of art.

Today we went to the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. I never thought I would tire of looking at guns but today I did. The Buffalo Bill Center of the West (COW - get it?) is one of our exhibits. In Deadwood, did you stop in the new visitors center? Big fake rocks with a mountain lion on top of one, and an old prospector's wall tent? That's one of ours, too. What strikes me about wandering around the West is the sheer number of near decrepit, old Babyboomers (along with me, my sister, and BIL) blasting around on their shiny new Harleys Then there's Moonshine Gulch, an old biker bar run by an old hippie chick on a gravel crossroads back in the hills. Not a museum but it should be.

We spent some time in and around Deadwood a couple years ago. I had to explain to a German couple why there were whisky bottles and cards with a hand of aces and eights all over Hickock's grave. By the way, that cemetery is all uphill.

By the way, that cemetery is all uphill. Only one way. They had to save the flat ground, what little there is of it, for the living. For those that haven't been there Deadwood is crammed into a long, narrow and deep valley surrounded by the steep slopes of National or State forest with little prospect of expansion.
