Don't know who to attribute it to but I agree with it.
"Of course they're not going to be stop with a few Confederate generals. They're just getting started. Pretty soon it will be all statues. Then it'll be movies. Then books. They're on a roll and they're not going to stop until they've turned the entire country into 'Fahrenheit 451', Mao's Cultural Revolution, and '1984' all mashed up together and managed by Google"

Do you really care how many tributes are left to representatives of the confederacy? For me it is only a slightly interesting thing, from a social studies or historical perspective, as to where to draw the line in honoring leaders of currently unpopular causes. But I do not have a dog in the fight. Do you have some rebel relative or is this more of a damn liberals ruining society sort of observation?

I don't really buy the "camel's nose" premise behind the quote. I think it's entirely possible to get rid of "Confederate" monuments -- especially when it can be easily illustrated that they are either anachronistically created or unwisely allowed to remain in the name of a familial solution within the general reconstruction.
Whether it is probable that it would stop at that, I don't know.
It wasn't long ago that the focus of monuments on public property was that of statues and artwork with religious content. Those are the kind of monuments I would apply the "Don't destroy our history" to. But that's because the impetus behind their destruction has been to re-write history in a manner that would suggest that it wasn't people of a Christian worldview that were instrumental in creating our secular government. I don't want that history re-written. I don't care if Confederate monuments are removed from public land.

I'm not sure, but I don't think there are any Confederate memorials around here. Or at least if there are, I've never heard of them.
If some municipality, operating through it's local, elected government, decides to take down a memorial, why should I care? Makes no difference to me.
If a bunch of peckerwoods don't like it and decide to hold a protest, why should I care? I don't see any reason not to just ignore them.
(Although I do hold a modest number of shares in Home Depot, so I hope that's where they go to buy their tiki torches.)

I just figure antifa took lessons from the Taliban. If the statue doesn't fit your religion, blow the fuckin' thing up. Worked for the Buddhist statues in Afghanistan. Ought to work here.

It's certainly of a feather. Erase and rewrite history we don't like. Down the memory hole with it! We have always been at war with Eastasia!

I do buy the "camel's nose" premise. Since 1913 with the 16th and 17th Amendments the US has been going more and more totalitarian and the only difference between the parties is which thug is in charge. More power to the "state" less power to the people.

That's the spirit! There's the straight forward, antagonistic stuff. But perhaps, like our established policy on Hitler references, we can start waiting until page 8 to bring in Taliban, Isis, Boko Haram and Khmer rouge and al-Qaeda taunts.

President Lincoln: General Lyon, Sir, I need you to march on Omaha directly! General Lyon: No offense, Boss, and not to sound like a village idiot (see what I did there??) but where the hell is Omaha?

Look, let's be real here. I'm a life-long Alabamian, so I can speak pretty confidently.
Those statues of Confederate war heroes weren't erected exactly to document history or heritage. Not really. They were erected to say to everyone, "You may have beaten us in the war, but you still didn't take away our attitude toward our superiority and black folks' inferiority. So you can just go suck it."
You want to preserve history and heritage? Fine. Move the statues to a museum, surround them with information about their historical context, whatever. They don't belong in the public square.

Like Millring, I don't really care if they take down Confederate statues but those who are insisting that they come down often strike me as being as bad if not worse than the problem they see that needs "fixing".

Thank you, Shannon, for your informed opinion. (And, also, incidentally, for enlightening me on "Alabamian" -- I guess I always have used "Alabaman," but then, I am a Minnesotian.)

Well, thank heaven the Union was in the right.* Otherwise, they'd have to remove this monument from my neighborhood!! *Inherent sarcasm implied.

Include the statues of Sherman and Custer with them.
