Good morning. Supposed to be sunny until the eclipse. I figured out how to use my telescope to project the sun on to my drafting board so we should be safe to watch it.
Have a good Monday, if possible.

I live at the intersection where I66 coming out of DC ends meeting I81 going north and south. The natural way the intersection is designed makes it the most dangerous stretch of I81 anywhere, from New York somewhere where it crosses into Canada all the way down to Knoxville where it ends at I75. So we're used to the occasional miles of gridlock.
But this weekend it was silly on the southbound side. I've been revamping my deck and occasionally driving into the big city- Winchester- for supplies and stuff and the I81 south has been packed all weekend,
Yesterday afternoon my neighbor, the state trooper, came over to kibitz and he'd been working that mess all weekend. Turns out it's mostly traffic with folks heading to Tennessee and North Carolina for the big eclipse.
Good heavens.
Personally, I saw the simulation on Facebook where they passed a Moonpie in front of the sun. I'm good.

Morning
78F/25.5C Cloudy with a good chance of rain.
A dreary Monday for sure. Luckily I have plenty of things to do, best get to it.
20 Days to IJ. I hope that's enough time to do what needs to be done. I see Evan started out for Vinton today, 20 days is enough time to walk there if he doesn't dilly dally along the way.

Will spend the day doing some yardwork and mowing, so all that is behind me while I take care of Barb and her hip replacement on Wednesday.
Joshua comes in sometime today or tomorrow.
The last thing on my mind (not the Paxton tune) is the eclipse. If it gets dark while I'm mowing, I'll turn on the lights.

surprisingly clear skies, so the eclipse will be obvious. I wonder if it's a sign?
better days y'all

Hey, will the sun catch up to the moon or the moon catch up to the sun? Moonrise was a few minutes before Sunrise and Sunset will be a few minutes before Moonset so the sun is catching up with and passing the moon. What I don't get is they keep saying the eclipse moves west to east and I don't think so since both things move, well apparently move, east to west. I suspect it will happen here before it happens in Oregon.

This may help you out, Bruce -- they are already capturing the start of it from a Gulfstream III. www.nasa.gov/eclipselive/#NASA+TV+Public+Channel

Yeah, they say it has started in Oregon so I guess it has to do with the angle you're looking at it then. It's noon here so the sun is overhead and the moon should still be west of the sun, so if you're west the closer moon is already cutting into the sunlight. Hadn't thought of it that way. Anyway, I can't get my projector to work now because the sun is at a higher angle than my telescope can reach. I'll wait awhile. The most we'll get doesn't happen for another 2 hours. Maybe I can get a better angle on it then.

Somewhere in this country some ijit is going to drive wearing those stupid glasses. According to my neighbor the trooper, that won't be the stupidest thing to happen today.
