If Doug's songbook is a PDF, perhaps it can be posted here and kept in the library. If needed, I could probably turn it into a PDF.

If needed, I could probably turn it into a PDF. a portion of his songbook is in PDF, those songs that he thought he could perform if given a week to prepare/'brush up'. He would keep the .doc portion updated and would then create a PDF when he reembered. There's also a section that is just a collection of songs that he pulled off the internet that he wanted to work on/format for future use. one of the copies I have of the PDF file is 2.4 GB, I don't think it can be stored on the board and emailing is also out of the question. I'll look into putting it on some kind of file sharer. Or bringing a bunch of microSD cards or USB sticks to IJ '18.

I mentioned in a Daily that the Friday pistol shoot at IJ won't be the same anymore. That is because Doug always brought something different and interesting to the shoot. One year it was a very old S&W Police .38 Special revolver, another year two Russian made Nagant revolvers and last year a Ruger Bearcat .22 revolver, beautifully made little gun and a real treat to shoot.

Here are some photos from my first Idiot Jam. How appalling - we all were so much younger! And it was only ten years ago. The first in that tacky but wonderful little bar in Urbana. Doug. We gave Doug some socks to wear with his sandals: I didn't know what to make of Doug (though I loved Chris right away) but by the time I had taken this photo I knew what a fine man he really was.

The first time I met Doug, he scared me. He came out of Factorychef’s house with no shirt, no shoes, a hat on his head and I am positive his toenails were painted black. I thought, holy crap, am I going to survive this guy? After a few minutes he walked over, looked at me with a crooked sort of smile on his face and said, “Dr. L J, huh? Now the shit is really gonna start.” The way he said it told me I had nothing to fear after all. From that moment on I was very aware of the twinkle in his eye. This does not mean I was in any way prepared to hear him perform his Dolly Parton song at IJam and watch the reactions of the audience, of course. It was a performance I will not soon forget!

Well maybe I can step into that role... Hell, I'm usually wearing Birkenstocks, the official hobbit fighting footwear, when it's not winter. I could bring something unique for quite a few years without duplication.

The first time I ever saw Doug at all was in this photo that Kate posted. I hadn't been to an Idiot Jam yet. Was just getting kind of acquainted with every one a little. Then Kate sent me a list of names from this photo, and who everyone was where. Faces on names. Personalities became better defined. I've been forever grateful for that, and silly that we still haven't met yet. But my first IJ was 2009, brought daughter Shay. Meeting Doug then, he had already cut his hair and trimmed the beard, and looked basically the same as that for the duration.

I just found out about Doug's passing because I'm connected with Kate via Facebook. I wanted to log back into the Soundhole to share a memory as well.
Doug and Chris were travelling through the west several years ago and it turns out that they were going to be driving right past our house as they descended highway 80 coming down from Donner Pass to Sacramento. Apparently, they burned up the mobile home's brakes coming down that hill (It's notorious for that. I've seen several big rigs off the side of the road with the driver spraying the brakes with a fire extinguisher.)
In any case, they made camp at a KOA in Auburn and took the jeep back up the hill to our house so we could spend a day together. We played a little guitar together. I remember having difficulty playing with Doug because of his unique sense of time.
This was way back when the step daughter had just moved in with us. One of the issues we had was that Thunder was confused as to his place in the pack since we had new people in our house. Thunder had decided that he was going to take food out of the trash can to show that he's higher up in the pack. He was making a mess and he was getting a bit more aggressive to protect his place in the pack. Doug works with dogs a lot and had a suggestion. We put a mouse trap on the lid of the trash can such that it would snap away from the front. Then we laid a tea towel over the trap. If Thunder start to stick his nose into the trash can it would set off the trap and make a loud scary noise but not snap on him.
That night we made dinner and brought our plates out to the dining room table. Within seconds of leaving the kitchen we heard a loud SNAP! and Thunder scurried out with his tail between his legs and a look on his face of "WTF was that?" It only took that one time and Thunder never dug through the trash again.
About a week later I got an email from Doug saying he was going to be in town. So I gave him a call to see if he wanted to get breakfast together. He said "Sure, but I'm in Oregon right now."
"Didn't you just send me an email saying you're going to be in Auburn?" I asked.
"No", he said, "I sent that a week ago before we saw you guys."
Somehow I had completely missed his email and thought it was a recent email and he was in town.
"So", I said, "Does that mean you're not coming to breakfast?"
He just laughed. I heard him turn to Chris to say "You won't believe this".
Yeah, he was quite a character.
