In retrospect, and after the fact, my manager admitted to me that he finally understood what she had been doing. But that taught me something about co-workers, in general: with one or two exceptions through a long career, these people are not your friends. They are contestants in a serious game of corporate Darwinism. I think about that a lot when I wonder whether I should have moved to the corporate side versus staying with the Government. At least among my co-workers, the give-a-crap and team work factors are still very high.

When I was in the corporate world we had the mandatory sexual harassment training every year, and most of it was purely corporate CYA. We also had our annual "Always Honest" meeting and manual, that we had to sign and swear we had read and studied and would follow 'til death, and it was even more corporate bullshit than the harassment training was. In our meetings with the corporate attorney we brought up several corporate polices that were clearly unethical bordering on illegal, and the corporate attorney blathered on in a complete circle of legalese that this was just fine kid go away you bother me. SOP.
One sexual harassment session stands out, though. The facilitator was a large loud street-wise black woman from Chicago, and in any other situation I would have loved to go to a bar with her and get rip-roaring drunk. In training she spoke in euphemisms, but you could tell she knew all the words and practices and could out-swear any dozen sailors. There was nothing in that session that was left unclear.

she would pop up every so often, like a shaft of asparagus, I was wondering who else may have spotted this and thought it was funny. I did. One of the funniest things I've read here in some time. Howard.....that was wonderfully funny. Could have gotten lost considering the content of your post, but no.....stood out nicely.

This word guy always has to suppress a giggle whenever I hear or read about a horny priest being defrocked -- isn't that exactly where all the trouble begins? Oh, defrock me, baby! Haha. If Bill had written Cornflake’s lecture material... Today’s topic: “ Lay People. Verb or Adjective? “

From someone who didn’t get,or is ignoring the training. Seems appropriate for this thread.

Could have gotten lost considering the content of your post, but no.....stood out nicely. You know, Don, I didn't think it was funny when I was composing the post. It just came out spontaneously—the most graphic way to describe that person's actions. Tragedy + time = comedy, isn't that the adage? We can laugh at it now, but 25 years ago, it was anything but funny. Thank you.

I vividly remember sitting through video training on racial sensitivity (can't remember the exact title). Three old white guys sat in the back of the room making very insensitive comments under their breath the whole time. I don't think the training worked. Sexual harassment training was also mandatory, but was individual on-line. We had one male manager who had gone through a series of relationships with women in the office. Otherwise a very nice guy and I think it was all consensual, but it can't really be consensual if you're in a position of power.
