Last week I decided to look for a new bicycle, but one with battery assist. I found the Trek Super Commuter to be a good choice . I put money down for the shop to acquire a frame my size, waited a week for it to get set up, and went in today to pick it up. They tell me there is a problem. The carbon fiber frame has a chip in it. Plainly visible and about the size of a pencil eraser head. They wanted to know if I would accept it like that. For a $5200 bike you want me take it with a chip in it? They offered to throw in some extra shit like helmet. The owner wasn’t there and the employees had no power to negotiate a makrdown...so he says. I said no, and said get another frame and call me when its ready. As I left I said to tell the owner that I’d take it with 50% discount. He thought that was very funny. I didn’t .

That’s a nice bike, Paul. It’s the bike I wanted to buy, but it was 2-1/2 times the price of the bike I got, and I still don’t know how well these things hold up under year-round riding. I’d suggest talking to the owner. Let him/her know how disappointed you are, as well as angry that the clerk tried to talk you into taking a damaged bike. Ask the owner how long it’ll take to get a replacement in, since they’re starting from scratch, and let him know that you’re trying to decide if you want to follow through on the order, that it had been a tough decision between the Trek and the Specialized Turbo Vado 6.0 www.specialized.com/us/en/mens-turbo-vado-6-0/p/154578?color=239447-154578, and that you’re going to have to reevaluate. The owner should be bending over backwards to keep the sale. If he’s willing to let you walk away, it might be for the best that the problem came up now rather than later. Note: I picked the Vado because it has similar features and price point. You might have to choose another bike if there are no Specialized dealers in your area. Other note: If you already gave them money, forget most of what I said. Still talk to the owner. Still let him know how pissed you are. But rather than implying that you might take your business elsewhere, just stare at him like you’re seriously considering killing him. Other other note: Okay, not like you’re going to kill him. Just stare at him. Then break down and cry.

Another annoyance is that $200 of that Trek price reflects Trump tarrifs (or so they told me when I ordered it).

Whoa. For $5200 you could have got a brand new riding lawn mower and a Les Paul. Just sayin'

Or one of these and gas for a few years:

(But then you would get no exercise and probably be injured in an auto collision)

(But it would be fun, riding that is, not the being in an auto collision part)

I saw the thread title and thought it was about nobody coming up with a way to build a transporter. Never mind.

I'm not sure how carbon fibre will do with a chip out of it. Might make it weaker, susceptible to breakage. Steel and aluminum would not have the same concern. I just don't know how well carbon fibre can handle a stress riser like that. Might be more brittle; less ductile than metals. Or not. I just don't know.
But I'd be concerned. Especially at those prices. It better be in perfect shape.

Ruckus composites in Portland OR repairs carbon fiber bikes. A chip in the carbon is a deal breaker. Just the front forks are carbon on that, right? I rode it when I was shopping for my ebike and really didn't see any difference between it and the Giant. But it was a nice riding bike. I still feel I blew it a bit by getting the flat bar bike. For me, a road bike with drop bars is more comfortable. The Giant store here in Plalm Desert has a Giant Road e+ on the floor in my size. Trek just came out with a full carbon frame road bike. I assume Giant will do the same next year just to keep up. When that happens, *maybe* the current Giant road bike will go on sale. If that happens I'll make the move. Other than that I love the ebikes.

The part of the frame that holds the battery was molded specifically for the battery. So that part of the frame is also composite. But I wasn’t as concerned about structural integrity as I was simply not going to pay full priced for a blemished product. Sir, your new car is ready for pickup. It even comes pre-populated with door dings.

That kind of price is out of the question for me. I am looking at the Aventon Pace 500 or the RadCity, which are $1500-1800. Seem adequate for my modest needs.
