Good morning.
Having to farm out work I would usually do myself this year. With the tree and fence work cleaned up the next project I can't do is weeding and mulching so I contacted my manual labor guy who came over took a look at the place and agreed to do it. I suspect he underestimated the job but he'll start tomorrow. I had a pallet of bagged mulch delivered yesterday afternoon. Nick is a tall lanky looking black guy who advertises on Facebook for almost any kind of work you need done. I had him pressure wash the house and clean out the gutters a couple of months ago and he and another guy uncovered the pool and cleaned up the area around the pool for me. He's a hard worker and does what he says he'll do for a very reasonable price so I've been over-paying him so he'll get to me quickly and I'll probably over-pay him again on this job. He has a wife and 3 kids to support. His wife has the same back problem I have so she and I trade disparaging reviews of the state of medicine around here. She just got her 2nd round of shots, the ones I'm waiting for. I did the weeding and mulching myself last year which may have contributed to my back problem so I'll just watch and pay this time.
Happy Thursday.

Endorphins are still flowing through my system following my 21 mile bike ride this morning. Rest, shower and lunch at the Chinese restaurant in Vinton, then I'm heading to my cabin.

A nice, cool, sunny, blue sky day, 62 on its way to 76. A perfect day to head over to the bowling alley and spend the day slamming down Buds.

Yesterday morning our DirecTV service died after a software upgrade. Another long phone conversation with someone in India. Supposedly sending out a technician with a new box between noon and 2:00 PM. Never happened. Another call to someone else in India, who agreed to send a tech between 4:00 and 8:00 PM. Nobody called. Nobody showed. We've spent way too much time on this. Can't get cable where we are. Seriously considering living with what we can get over the air for now.
Looks like our plans to go back and start cleaning up the old house today are not in the cards. Going tomorrow. It will likely rain Saturday, putting us behind on yard work. Good news is that our well pump replacement there was billed at only about $2,300.
In other good news, Mr. H got his computer set up and networked his and mine and the laptop. So we're back in the 21st century.

I have never heard one good word about DirectTV. I've had DirecTv for about 20 years and the most positive thing I can say is it's better than the cable system we had before.

Neato ! (Through the magic of the internet and free audio software [audacity], I recorded the audio from this video. And changed pitch from C to G. [take note Todd Frank]. And slowed it down by 10%, and I think I can work this one up. - I need some peppy songs.)

Endorphins are still flowing through my system following my 21 mile bike ride this morning. Rest, shower and lunch at the Chinese restaurant in Vinton, then I'm heading to my cabin. There’s a cabin in the pines, Near the lake they call Delphi, And a boat and stuff is waiting there for me, I’ll be going back today, And from there I’ll never stray, Unless I take a notion to sometime.

Posted on FB but I guess I'll put it here too.
Long story but it has a happy ending. For the past couple of years I've had an intermittent problem getting my mower to start. It's been in the shop a few times but their last try said it needed a new starter, actually starter solenoid but in this case it's all one unit and the part costs $400.00. I've always been able to get it to start eventually by banging on things or using jumper cables from the car. Back in February I decided that although the battery tested OK with a meter it had to be the battery so I got a new one. Same problem. That's when I realized I could always get it to start by jumping it from the car but that's a pain in the butt so I got one of those portable jump-start boxes, and it works but constantly needs recharging. This morning out of desperation or frugality, not wanting to pay $400 plus labor for a new starter when I know the starter works, I Googled "Honda motor starts with a jumpstart but not from good battery" and read a few articles most of which said replace the starter but then there was a video saying "Don't get a starter or new battery yet", so I watched it. The guy had been through the same stuff I'd already tried and nothing worked until he replaced the bolts that connect the cables to the battery. Having already cleaned the connections and stuff I doubted it but bolts are cheap. Getting them at ACE Hardware can be a problem though. I went to the hardware section at ace knowing the bolts were 7/16 'cause that's the wrench I used to disconnect them. I didn't bring one with me though. Dumb. Anyway a guy helped me find 2 7/16 bolts and washers and nuts. They seemed big but he measured them and said they were 7/16. $4.65 for all and I drove home. I checked and yup they were too big so I measured them and they were 5/8 so I went back to ACE, with one of the originals, got the same guy and said I'd trade him for a couple of ones like the originals. Those he found in the 1/4 bin and then I had to go through the return operation and purchase the new stuff that was $1.35 total so get a refund. I had brought a 7/16 wrench with me so I knew these would fit. I put them in and the sucker fired right up. If that wasn't just a coincidence which I'll know later, 2 stupid bolts for $1.35 just saved me $400.00 plus labor. Whatever your problem, use Google. Someone else has had the same problem and has found an answer and probably made a video of it.
