Hosted my second-ever open mike in Stillwater tonight, one other player showed up, two hours to fill, no audience other than the shop's three emplyees for half the gig, then maybe six people came in later, sat down, ate, drank, talked loudly, clapped only a couple times.
Took me about 45 minutes in rush hour traffic to get there, all I got paid was $20 in gas money and some decaf coffee.
My own fault, though -- I offered to do this a few times to see if we could attract an audience if the owner promoted it, which she has done -- fliers at the local music store, signs on her door all week, even an article in the local paper.
Cold, windy night, I spose everyone just stayed home to be warm and snug.

There are those crappy nights, eh? Although if your playing filled half the night, the employees who were listening probably didn't think it was crappy.

Second-ever? Was there a first one, and was it better? Sorry about the sucky cold night. The good thing, though, is that you have lots of good gigs to look back and compare this evening to.

I've organized some duds in my time too. Not a good feeling. Bill, do you have other gigs lined up this weekend?

Yeh, another one scheduled for two weeks from tonight.
Michael Ward showed up tonight, thank god. I thought I sent you a reminder, David.
Wren -- I have a gig tomoro that will be close and good and fun and lucrative, and then I host the other open mike Sunday, which is usually pretty good, but can be kinda sucky, too.

Bill, I am sorry to hear this....Man I hate Crappy Nights period... But somewhere in all of is, there is a thing or two to be grateful for......
Someone once told me, Hey SteveO it's only a test..... he said, how crappy was it ? did you have a drink over it ? I told him, No.... Well there you go he replies, there is something to be real grateful for.... I'm thinking (Jerk) Yup, You had another 24 hrs of sobriety.... Well this was true.....so I guess it really didn't suck after all

Does sound crappy.
Would it help to think of it as paying dues? Or adversity builds character. Or a least you didn't bomb opening for JT.
Platitudes all suck. Maybe next time you can personally recruit some friends to pad the roster.

Bummer about your gig, Bill! I suspect it will grow in time, knowing how you sound. Playing outside in the cold is always hard. As a kid my bands always seemed to get booked for the outside stage during the Natchitoches Christmas Festival. Down by the banks of the Cane River Lake (don't ask, long story) on the first saturday in December in Natchitoches, LA. Some years it would be perfect Autumn, but then it would be sleeting or 34 and you couldn't feel your hands on an iced-over stage.. Great memories, however. Blessed, a small towner, Dan

Hey Todd,
I use "exdrummer" on AG and "chollyred" on the old TTT. Just decided to use my real name here.

Bummer about your gig, Bill! I suspect it will grow in time, knowing how you sound. Playing outside in the cold is always hard. Sorry if I left the impression that this was an outside gig. Had it been, I would be dead now, as it was in the 30s and windy as hell. I only meant that it was a cold night and that such weather tends to keep prospective club-goers home.

Bill:
Try to look at the bright side—you received 20 bucks and some hot coffee to practice for two hours. My wife usually just goes into the other room and doesn't even ply me with warm beverages!
