"I used to teach a writing course based on the history of technology. 'Why are we reading this? I'll never have to use it when I'm a (insert target career here).' There's plenty of indifference, ignorance, and laziness out in average-Joe land, where certification is more important than education. The failure of the academic world is in giving in to the notion that the customer is always right--or that the student is merely a customer."
I'll never forget hearing a heated remark like that in freshman English in college. One guy was irate at having to read assigned poems. Why doesn't the guy just says what he means in a few lines? I'm going to be an engineer, he said. Why should I waste part of my education reading mush like this?
My answer, as of now anyway: Because I hope you don't define yourself by your slot in the great economic machine. You'll also be a human being.

I had students say, “Why do we have to study this? We will never use it.” I taught English. Some of them were correct.

This is Wilson Middle School in Cedar Rapids. Grant Wood taught there in the twenties. At that time, students practiced archery on the roof. Right in the middle of a residential neighborhood, blocks from downtown.

I have unsuccessfully hunted deer with a recurve bow. Fun to fool around with. I shot a bunny with one, and would not want to do that again! Current compound bows are more like rifles. I was at a range with my recurve bow a year ago. At 25 yards I was lucky to keep 5 arrows within an 18 inch circle. Someone loaned me a compound bow, explained the sights and the hold. I hit the bullseye on my first shot.
