I just saw the news txt and came here. What a great groundbreaking guitarist. At least his suffering is over. R.I.P. Eddie.

Loved his playing. Loved the music videos and humor, especially "Hot for Teacher." Yes, rest in peace, Eddie.

Loved his playing. Loved the music videos and humor, especially "Hot for Teacher." Yes, rest in peace, Eddie. That's what always seemed to set them apart. There was a playfulness and joyfulness to them that just oozed out of the music. Eddie was always smiling. Of course, if I could play a 13 minute guitar solo and keep 18,000 people entertained, I'd be smiling too.

I've always held a contrarian view on his playing. He was undoubtedly technically masterful, and had tremendous speed. That said, I was never overly impressed with the depth of his playing. Fast n' flashy does not always translate to emotion and feeling.
R.I.P. regardless.

Fast n' flashy does not always translate to emotion and feeling. R.I.P. regardless. I'm with you, Paul. My forever guitar hero, no surprise, is Lonnie Knight, who I believe had all the skills to do what EVH did, but chose to employ such high-speed technique only sparingly -- when appropriate to ramp up emotion, or to contrast with a previous softer, more poetic passage. I always ask myself after hearing a hot guitar solo: Will I be able to sing or hum any part of it the next day? With Lonnie, Knopfler, Santana, BB King and so many others, YES. With EVH, not for me, no. But certainly a standout in his genre, no question.

I think Spanish Fly might be the first 'tapping' song I heard recorded on an acoustic guitar. Had no idea how the speed was reached and my mind was a bit boggled.
