There seems to be anger over lockdowns that I don't understand. I googled to see if the term meant something other than what I thought. The definition I got was: "A lockdown is a restriction policy for people or community to stay where they are, usually due to specific risks to themselves or to others if they can move and interact freely." That's what I understood the term to mean.
Arizona never had a lockdown as most of us understand the term. Most of my friends and relatives in other states never got locked down, either. I think my daughter in California did but I gather it wasn't for very long. Maybe Howard did in New York.
Trump decided to let state and local governments decide what restrictions to impose. Anyone who experienced a lockdown did so because elected officials at the state, county or municipal level ordered it. If some of them ordered lockdowns that shouldn't have been imposed, they can be voted out.
The Snopes piece Peter posted says the authors of this study used the term much more broadly. Arizona did have some limits on public events and gatherings for a while. By the time they were imposed, they were pretty meaningless. Such events were being cancelled anyway because not enough people were attending. The virus had them spooked. We also had some relatively brief restrictions on certain kinds of businesses, such as bars, although here the exceptions allowed most of them to stay open.
This stuff was all local. We all have remedies if we and enough of our neighbors think the government screwed up.
PS: Before anyone responds, let me add that I know pandemic restrictions hurt some people much more than others. That was no surprise. Early on in majorminor's original pandemic thread, I mentioned that we'd see that and that I thought we ought to provide financial support to people on whom the pain fell unequally. There wasn't much agreement if any. I thought stimulus checks should have been targeted to those who took bigger hits. Congress didn't agree.

James You use the abreviation ETA often and in different situations. To me it only means one thing, Estimated Time of Arrival. That meaning doesn't work in many of the times you use it. You also have a habit of dropping a URL into the middle of a post with out an explanation of what its relevance to the current conversation might be. I find this very confusing. I don't know if this is a difference of European shorthand to American, or I'm even more obtuse than I an aware of, but a little clarity or explanation when you use it might be helpful. Thanks for considering this. Doc.

ETA also stands for Edited To Add. I generally hope that a URL contains enough in its wording to indicate what part of the preceding conversation its inclusion is relevant to. I usually try and put a brief note if that isn't the case. However, I will try and bear your comments in mind in future.
