With Covid coming around again, I was wondering about Idiotjam. I spoke with Phil (Philintheblan) at a concert in Garrison, and his thought that we have enough Iowans around that we could have one anyway, and he's right. So, based on that, Idiotjam is on. I'll notify the Cobblestone and La Reyna this week. YAHOO!

I stopped by the Cobblestone a couple days ago. With a couple years off because of Covid I felt like I was starting all over again. Which I was. There are new owners. Husband and wife were both outside since it was such a nice day and I got the chance to meet them both. Very pleasant people. Being younger than most of us, they had doings of the entire hotel on their phone. No need to step inside to have a discussion.
The gist: We are more than welcome. This includes the after concert party which to me is the biggest hurdle with new owners. They were totally cool with that. Thursday and Friday are completely open in terms of reservations, Saturday there is a wedding so there are just ten rooms left. I don't see this as a problem at this point.
I remember we ran into that several years ago and as time went on there were more than enough cancellations. I'm not concerned. If there are, we'll figure it out. Everything else, like using the Merc for Friday night, the train depot during the day Saturday, La Reyna's on Saturday evening for the pre-concert meal and invading 218 (Vinton Family Restaurant) Sunday morning are all good to go. If this all comes together we'll have to find a solution to Paleo and Philentheblank bringing all this food to the Merc and feeding us on Friday. It was wonderful and tasty and everyone loved it and it was very much apprectiated but I'm working on an alternative to them putting up all that work. I think I've got one, the answer coming in a couple weeks.
So there we go. I know Covid it still going on and things could change at any point, but at this point this is what's going on.

As it gets closer, we'll have to figure out who all will be here on Thursday evening. I know Phil talked about hosting a Thursday evening get together and if he can't I am willing to host it again.

Just booked a room for Friday-Sunday 9/9-11. Now just have to beware divine cooperation, crick rising, Covid, unanticipated health crises. . . .

Last time we had Ijam the Hitchin' Post people were on vacation, so we had the Friday night thing at the Merc instead. It was nice to have room to spread out as opposed to sitting elbow to elbow all night. I do want to give the Hitchin' Post some business, though, and the owner is looking into getting a catering license not just for that night, but for other events as well. If not, I have some other ideas that don't involve some very good-hearted local forumites going beyond the pale like they did last time.

I think after the first few visits we moved from "special guests" to some sort of distant relatives you see on a somewhat regular basis. At some point you move from, "here, let me get that for you" to, "you know where everything is, get it yourself if you want it." No need for any locals to put forth a bunch of extra effort for our benefit.

I agree. And that's kind of nice. Any meal alternatives I have involve paying locals, though.

I agree. And that's kind of nice. Any meal alternatives I have involve paying locals, though. Well sure. I mean, for sure restaurants get paid. If people have hosting expenses (food, depot rental?) they should be reimbursed. Vinton and its citizens should not have to pay to have us visit! Except for Bill. Bill doesn't show up for breakfast for less than $8.50.

If there is interest, I would like to host the group with Paleo's help. We will have something to munch on, and some cold drinks as well. We are in town, and not far from the hotel. As we get closer, I will post directions to my place. It is a pleasant and well-shaded lawn.
