I think since the juices are flowing a bit you should still build something just to get your rocks off . How about a nice solid body kit from StewMac. Marty when I have used TruOil for necks and once for a Uke I sanded to 1000G. Basically polished the wood. I think Addam Stark told me to do that. You are right, every defect and scratch has to be dealt with. Usually they show up with Naptha but not always

Take the time to make a set of body/neck templates and you'll be able to make all the Teles you want. Somebody borrowed my Strat template and never returned it but I still have the Tele, Jazzmaster and Musicmaster sets. You can make a set of templates from an original body pretty easily. Just need the correct bearing bits for your router. I have been toying with the idea of building a amp into a Tele body, far from an original idea. But I just might be able to make a better sounding one using a Tele Thinline body.
