Sitting here single I decided to stick my neck out a couple days ago and see if I could find any gigs. In early October I've got an hour and a half gig at a winery, paying well, and decided to spend that check ahead of time. I've got a real decent amp (from Marty years ago), and a mic with a cable I can plug into the amp. I've also got a cable I can plug into the guitar and the amp. I need a mic stand, and then decided to get a wagon or what some people call a hand cart or something so I can take the stuff in an out of places. I was driving by Lowe's today and saw this:  About 40 bucks. Then, (Iowans will know) at West Music in Cedar Rapids I saw a mic stand for about the same price. I don't know. I thought a gooseneck stand might be good, but they told me good things about boom stands. With a bit of fun money to spend, any suggestions on the cart or stand? Thanks ahead of time. |

If you're going to be amplified and sing, the mike stand probably is a higher priority--though loading in/out with an amp, guitar, and associated gear can be a backbreaker. So what do you want to strain--your back or your voice?

Do you plan to perform sitting or standing? If standing, a gooseneck stand should be fine. If you will be sitting, I think a boom stand is easier to use. If will sit sometimes and stand others, I'd go with the boom stand.

That looks like a versatile hand cart. I suggest that you have some bungee cords, or better yet, tie down straps, to secure your amp and guitar to the cart.

A gooseneck appears to be an extra addition to to a mic stand, but not an expensive addition. Especially since a straight stand is less expensive than one with a boom. Since I sit consistently that does seem like the better option at this point. I appreciate the thoughts. |

It can be a two-wheeled dolly or a four wheel hand cart. Measuring it out everything should fit with, of course, the cords you mentioned, David. I'm thinking I might want larger wheels for when moving over a lawn as opposed to pavement, but I'm also guessing that tire size on such a thing would add a whole lot more to the price. |

Wife (the singer) uses a boom stand. Of course we're generally sitting on stools but that works if we're standing too. For moving gear, it's pretty much my back. Generally carts aren't that useful up and down stairs and in and out of doors.
That's about 45 years of experience.

I always used the term "dolly," but that was associated with the two wheel variety. I didn't know what to call the fancy rig in the picture. We probably don't have those way out west. I agree that bigger wheels would be great for grass, and also for steps and/or rough ground. You might need to book a few more gigs so you an get the rig epaul recommends. |

This is so cool.
We use a cart along the lines of the one in the picture. It can be a “two wheeler” or a 4-wheeled hand truck. We use it both ways.
K&M stands are excellent. You’ll want a boom as it makes your setup more versatile.
Don’t skimp on mic cables. Lower cost cables are lower cost for a reason.
If you don’t have one already, you’ll want an active DI box for your guitar. Much better than trying to use two mics. The Radial J48 is a good choice as it will run on 48V phantom power from your amp. Of course your pickup system is active (battery powered) so the on-board preamp may be all you need.
I’ll be more than happy to spend time with you on this stuff. Bring your rig over and we’ll go through some setups. I have DI boxes, stands, stools, etc. We can try stuff out to see what you’re most comfortable with.
