I clicked a “Like “ on Cornflake’s post because it is close to home. Environmental consulting and architecture/engineering firms require billable hours and it’s never enough. I found a solution in Phoenix. I didn't expect one and was considering teaching law at a state university elsewhere. My solution turned out to be possible and located in my own city. For many people and in many fields that won't work. It's hard to resist those pressures to work longer. I once read an article by a judge about how the practice of law had gone to hell. When he was a lawyer, the firm expected lawyers to participate in do-good community organizations, etc., and to avoid burning out. A lawyer was expected to bill about 1400 hours. The firm I started with in Phoenix expected 2000 even though they lied to me about it. The firm I switched to was happy with 1700 hours and probably would have tolerated less. I was a partner within four years and then got every third summer off to avoid burnout. That was already becoming rare. I was lucky.
