Mr. fucking know it all again pontificating. You cannot sell unbleached bone, think about how much organic matter is still there. What they do is boil, bleach it and then soak it in mineral oil to make it look like unbleached bone, sort of. Did you notice that the unbleached bone had a oily feel to it. I wipe it down with acetone before shaping a nut or saddle and again before polishing it. Don't want the oil on my sander or buffer. Were you just referring to me or to Marshall? Because we both know a few things.
I didn't sell it. I purchased it. It did not have an oily feel, as far as I can remember. Also, keep in mind that it was nine years ago, so even if it did, I might not remember anyway. That saddle is long gone, as well. Mark Dalton did a setup for me a few years ago, so it has had an official H&D saddle of bleached bone since then.

Folks, I think Marty was referring to himself. My apologies guys. Yes referring to myself. How many years have I spent trying to get people not to make smug remarks to others. I have a lot of catching up to do but not in that department. I still stand by the old "If you can't say anything nice don't say anything." The saddle in the photo does not look like what is selling as "unbleached bone" as it has a consistent color and not blotchy like what is on the market. In fact it looks like mammoth ivory with a warm pinkish color. I still have a small stock of that.

Especially Marshall & his cans of spray paint! When he was here he tried to sunburst my couch.

No need to apologize, Marty. We know you're a cranky old guy.
The saddle blank, when I purchased it online (from www.guitarpartsandmore.com, I think) it was advertised as unbleached bone. That could certainly be a misnomer, but it's definitely not mammoth ivory. Remember, the color balance under the lights when I took the photo, as well as the calibration of your computer screen, can shift the true color so you think it has a pinkish hue when, in fact, it might have been a tad more yellow.

Unbleached bone is like broasted chicken—a made up term used just to show it is not the usual. It can have an oily feel & I think some places treat it before it is sold so it won’t. Anyway, I like the look because it has a weathered, somewhat old, look that looks better than stark white on a guitar. I suggest not using broasted chicken bones for saddles. They are kind of brittle.

I always used wishbones from broasted chicken for saddles (and guitar nuts). So when it breaks I can wish I used something else.

When he was here he tried to sunburst my couch. Sorry about that. We had refried beans the night before, and that can cause a little discomfort.

It surprised us all but not as much as it did the chicken.

... And don't let your dog or cat eat them either. They can break and splinter, causing a puncture in the gastrointestinal tract. So guitar saddles will need warning labels?

Marty is correct! I just nicked this quote from Bob Colosi's website for backup:
"Bone saddles are a bleached white color, and can occasionally have some darker “speckling” in the grain. Most saddles can also be ordered in what is known vintage bone. The only difference between this and regular bone is the vintage bone is dyed to a “baby poop” yellow-brown color to give it an aged or vintage look. I also carry unbleached bone, which is quite similar in appearance to the whitened bone, but with a more “dishwater” appearance and often is unevenly colored. Sonically all of the bones are going to be identical….it’s just a matter of desired appearance."
