I hope they change the model. It would be nice to get rid of the "no profit" rule (or break-even rule, or operate-at-a-loss rule) and make some agreements that pass the cost of delivering packages from all taxpayers to the ones ordering all those packages (which is all taxpayers, but it's a matter of distribution). But maybe shift some of the cost back to Amazon, which then has to figure out how to pass it on to folks like me. I'd rather pay for shipping directly at the time of purchase rather than indirectly through taxes. Regarding the inequitable rural carrier situation, those who aren't supposing something nefariously conspiratorial in the management are suspecting a move toward simply changing the pay to straight hourly. It would at least mean (in my example above) that the Warsaw carrier carrying Amazon WOULD get paid more than the Bourbon carrier with no Amazon. The extent of the loss in running the Post Office is just mind-boggling. Tens of billions in deficit every single years. And the infrastructure is in a shocking state of wear and disrepair. And Washington is addressing the problems with all the wrong assumptions. The LLV vs all electric fleet is just one example of idiocy that is mind-blowing. But it's like a runaway train. Too much momentum ironically coupled to too much inertia. It's a nightmare.

I spent some time composing a letter to the editor of our local paper and submitted it. I got the return email that I am limited to 500 words. My letter was 1,578 words. I don't think 500 words would have the same impact. On a positive note, the online word counter I used (because my older version of Word doesn't have a word count tool) tells me that I wrote the letter at an 11-12th grade readership level.

I got it down to 586. I don't like the result and I don't see any way to cut more.

They're going to run the one at 586 words. Their advertising dept is going to contact me about prices to run the original.

I’d say that Amazon took advantage of the fact that the USPS needed to justify its existence, and so low balled them on their quote. So, until that contract expires, everyone may be diddled. It does seem weird that a government service, that was there to provide something essential at a reasonable cost, is doing deliveries like this. But, organizations never just fold themselves up and walk away — that’s never the mandate of those who work there. They keep clawing to keep going until they’re shot. We get almost zero actual paper mail now, it’s mostly flyers.
Here we get Amazon trucks, independent trucks, and the post office. The steady stream of them coming into the complex is quite something.
