I'm sure that Putin is grief-stricken.

I'm surprised he could actually get 10 people to fly in a plane with him.

It was easier than getting 10 people to sit next to a tenth story window with him.

Maybe, maybe not. His name was on the passenger list. I'll wait for confirmation. (I'll wait for a nice beer with dinner too).
Interesting the commercial plane "crashed." One story I saw speculated it was shot down.
Ahhhh, those Ruskies. Such and entertaining bunch.
(Maybe their lunar lander was shot down too?)

Who is he (or she as the case be) and why does he matter?

I think you guys are being unfair to Putin. I’m sure he welcomes spirited debate regarding policy decisions.

Leader of Wagner Group. Amongst other high profile Ukraine happenings, defiantly but ultimately abortively rolled his tanks towards Moscow recently demanding that his former friend and strong ally, Putin fire some Generals and stuff. His days have been widely assumed to be numbered since then.
Autocrat gangster politicians kill defiant and dissident elements.
Prigozhin was an almighty shithead but he annoyed a bigger one.

Anyone surprised by this news? Annoying Putin seems to put one at risk of fatal accidents.

There is video of it falling out out of the sky on NBC. It pretty much went straight down,

I would also wonder if Evgeni isn’t sitting on a beach somewhere, having arranged his ‘demise’. He’s currently sipping his third mai tai of the evening, and eyeing the waitress.

Who is he (or she as the case be) and why does he matter? Yevgeny and the Jets. They had a few minor hits in the 70's, but he crashed and burned after an ill-fated Gibson Sonex endorsement.

I did see on CNN that the plane fragments show holes in the fuselage that imply a missile strike as opposed to an explosion on board. Since nobody in Russia cares that Putin would take him out, it does nothing more than confirm it.

What was he doing in Russia anyhoo? He was exiled to Belarus, wasn't he? The guy was probably trying to stir up more mud in his fight with the military establishment. Probably trying to work his way back into Putin's favor. He became much more trouble than he was worth. I'm sure the military leadership wanted him GONE. Putin finally got tired of saving the dude.
"Alright. Just take him out."

What do I know?
But me in my simple mind I don't see Yevgeny trying to overthrow Putin. He thought Putin was his buddy. He was most likely upset about the Russian Military and how they were conducting the war (and the country). He probably just wanted to get closer to Putin to bend his ear and kick the Military Advisors out of Putin's inner circle, who were putting Yevgeny down.
After all, Putin gave him a free pass to Belarus already. (Which probably irked the Generals no end). But Y can never just let a sleeping dog lie.
