I think this is what great philosophers called the way life goes.

I think this is what great philosophers called the way < the cookie crumbles.> Do not crumble my cookies! I like them whole so they can be easily dunked.

Everybody knows God made donuts for dunking.

Yup. Might as well be a happy enchilada. Like the rabbi said, all is vanity. Eat, drink, and be merry. Heavy on the "drink" part.

If art is commissioned and somewhat dictated by someone is it still art? Can you be a true artist AND a capitalist? I dunno. Ask Leonardo Da Vinci, or Michelangelo.

I submit that most of what is considered the world’s greatest art probably falls into this category. Painters, composers, sculptors—the ones you’ve heard of—all seemed to have done it for the money whenever possible.

I basically agree with Mark and Marshall. Being broke doesn't improve anybody's work.
My creative impulses have been channeled into three areas. There are relatively few entrance barriers in any of them. That's probably a major reason why I picked them. So did a zillion other people. The supply of music, poetry and photographs exceeds the demand. That's why few people make much money doing any of them.
The woodworkers Steve mentions are in a different situation. The demand is obviously there. I suspect it's not easy to become adept in that area so there are fewer real competitors.
Schmoozing seems to be a necessary evil in any creative field that pays. I knew one successful painter and know a lot about another second-hand. They both had to sell their personas as well as their work.
