Windy and brisk here in Amana Land. We will be making turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, corn casserole, and roasted brussel sprouts today. Some french rolls for to soak up the gravy with as well. We will then proceed to have leftovers for about a week, since there is just the two of us, and then proceed to not eat turkey again for a year! Some might be asking about the sweet potatoes, we had them with ham over the weekend and again yesterday with the leftovers, so we are skipping those.
Pumpkin pie for dessert with a dollop of whipped cream.
To all those on the soundhole, don't eat too much, unless you want to then, do as I usually say, the meal isn't over when I'm full, it is over when I hate myself.

Our surviving family have been scattered (thinly) across the continent for decades and we gave up cooking years ago, so the two of us will have a nice sit-down dinner at a friendly restaurant--in fact, a sports bar with 17 video screens, all showing some variety of holiday athletic mayhem, which will keep catching my attention despite my near-complete indifference to football. My sister, who is a tireless crafter, did send us a nice handmade TG card and C's sister will probably call, so it's not like there are no family connections whatsoever. Later I will amuse myself by messing around with a 20-year-old Hoffman parlor guitar (actually, roughly O size) that's on loan from Brother John, the Benedictine monk I've been sitting in with at Bo Diddley's. John's usual axes are a small-body Kennedy and a LoPrinzi classical, but when he heard my Marin classical, he got the itch to play some of the Spanish and Renaissance repertory on it (John's got decent classical training), so we arranged a temporary exchange. The Hoffman has a surprisingly big voice--so strong that a new set of standard GHS lights made it a bit edgy. So I backed down to the silk & bronze lights and got a much mellower sound and better playability. (I think the truss rod needs a tweak, but I wouldn't presume to do that without asking John.) The guitar looks like this, but with some cosmetic upgrades--abalone rosette and binding. The other upcharge feature (per Hoffman's old website) is koa body. It's quite a handsome instrument.

Russell! Quite a bold move, putting different strings on someone else's guitar. Especially silk and bronze... wouldn't there be a distinct difference in string tension?
What's next? Ketchup on hot dogs? 😃

Brother John said I could put on new strings--the ones it was wearing were old and mixed (the A was a flatwound and the rest were D'Addario lights) and pretty dead. And GHS silk & bronze are fine on a range of guitars--I've used them on my Guild D-40 and Goodall as well as on the Cloutiers that were designed for compound strings. And the results are fine, at least to my admittedly compromised ears. (Frequency response tops out at 11K.) I mean to record the guitar for my little library of samples, and if I can figure out how, I'll post something here.

The whole crew, me, wife, kids, kids' wives, dog, and cat all gathered this morning for our traditional turkey day breakfast, complete with turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, green bean casserole, pumpkin pie and ice cream. And for this turkey day feast, I had procured a prized smoked turkey from our esteemed local meat shop.
But the darn thing was so darn salty, we all started gagging. So we piled into the car and took off for Perkins. They hadn't started their turkey dinner stuff yet, so I had a cheeseburger and some kind of soup. It was pretty good. Soup could have been hotter. But, all in all, it was ok.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Russell, I wonder if Brother John is at the Benedictine monastery that produced seven "calf-skin bound, museum-quality reproductions of the first completely handwritten, illuminated Bible." Our church has one, due to two donors.

Yup--there were recent news stories about those illuminated Bibles being sent out. The Abbey is an interesting institution beyond hosting a university--actually a pair of colleges, one for men and one for women, now joined. I have yet to ask John about his (apparently) roving remit and personal history. I get the impression that he had a different kind of life before signing up with the Benedictines.

Just us and the dog today and looking forward to a long door free 4 day weekend. Soaked in the hot tub with coffee then a little two mile hike with a light snow coming down. The big bowl of pizza dough I made last night has bubbled and doubled in size. Home made pizza and football coming up.

You make your own footballs? How do they compare to the Wilsons?

They sound, feel, and play fine. I am getting away from mediums. I play more finger style than flat pick, so keeping lights on a couple guitars works.

In-laws and the Chicago crew here today. Pat is still adjusting to her stroke related visual deficits and me my intrusive tinnitus but we are hanging in there. It’s been a major life changing event for both of us.
Russ I have worked on that Hoffman as well as multiple LoPrinzis.

Dinner done and my girls will play a few more rounds of Mario Kart before cleaning up what little I left to do. I rinse and put things in the dishwasher as I get done with them while cooking. Then they will watch LOKI and I will relax and play Breath of the Wild until dessert time.

Joe, please point me towards a recipe for the corn casserole you make. Thanks. Oven set to 350 Greased 8x8 glass pan. 1 stick of butter melted 1 can whole corn (drained) 1 can creamed corn 8oz sour cream 1 box jiffy corn muffin mix 3T sugar 1/2 tsp salt Mix everything together Spread evenly in pan Bake for 40 - 50 minutes until golden and a toothpick comes out clean in the middle. To make it more like Mexican corn cake, add 2 beaten eggs and up the sugar to 1 cup. Other additions I’ve seen, add shredded cheese to the top.
