If I’m not playing in the key of B, I’ll most often be using a B9 noted as (221222). I use my thumb to catch F# and B on the bass strings, my index finger to play D# on the D string and my ring finger to catch A, C#, and F# on the treble strings. This is the most generally useful form I’ve found for thumbstyle work and it’s useful for swing style chords too. If a B7 sounds OK, I'll often do one of those, but without the thumb. X21202. I haven't tried the B9. I will give it a shot, but probably still not use the thumb. Well the standard B9 is usually done as (2x122x or 2x1222) where the bass F# is noted using the middle finger which also mutes the A string; no thumb involved. This, along with the fingerings I use, work all up and down the neck. I also us the B7 fingering (2x4242) with my thumb on the bass F#, index barre on fret 2, ring finger notes F# on the D string and pinky catching D# on the B string. This “grip” is also useful anywhere on the neck. It’s basically the “Cowboy” A7 at the 2nd fret.

Y'all have been very helpful. Thanks Just to add to what I said above, Chicago’s fabled Old Town School of Folk Music has successfully taught literally hundred of thousands of people to play by putting them in a room together each week and getting them to chord and sing a song together. The students (of all ages) helped each other and had pride in their contributions. I only learned of the OTS after I’d already learned to play but their strategy was inspired.

I saw my teenage nephew yesterday and evidently he is mostly YouTube taught. Various channels. He strums and twangs proficiently for a newish learner. The beat up old Seagull guitar I found him hopefully helps. It sounds good and has a finger-friendly neck.

All my lessons were from The Music House, mostly from Don Zepp (see Zepp music on the web) and where I ended up teaching when Zepp retired.
