of either low cost and easy to use software that can be installed on a PC where you can plug in a microphone and make a recording? Not a good recording mind you, just a WAV, WMA or MP3 of oneself banging away on ones' poor old guitar.
My old PC has a microphone input somewhere on it. Seems like I ought to be able to record something doesn't it?!
Thanks, Fred

OK, I downloaded both Audacity and Goldwave. Tried Goldwave first, I couldn't figure it out. Went to Audacite next - seems easier to use and figure out. So far, I've tried a couple test recordings and it seems to do well. So for right now, Audacity is my recording software.
Thanks for the input guys. Fred

Fred,
I'd be interested to hear how this progresses for you. I was planning on buying some recording software. I do a killer rendition of "Dimming of the Day" that makes neighborhood cats wail and has my wife asking, "Don't you know anything ELSE??"
I reckon it's time to record it for posterity before my wife kicks my posterior.....

Paul, Audacity is really great to work with. I spent a couple hours this afternoon recording an old country song I always liked, The Wasy I Am by Merle Haggard. I first did just the chords and me singing the melody. Then I added a harmony line with a slight bit of echo to it. Then I added a lead section to fill over a chord section with no vocal. I left the vocal out of that section for the guitar lead. And last I added a bass line using a nylon stringed guitar with all the settings set for as bass as it could get.
I am pleased to say that the result of this is not terrible. Audacity let me select different volumes for the different tracks and add effects where I wanted them. I'm not a very sophisticated sound engineer, but I think it's a darn good little program. I'll try to email you a sample of the finished product.

Audacity works, or better yet try to use your smartphone for recording if you have trouble finding software online
