Well, got a phone call last night on the way home from my middle daughter's track practice. Our closest friends, the wife in that couple, passed away suddenly from a massive heart attack. She was in her mid forties. Not unexpected, she had a genetic condition that presupposed it, but had been continuously rigorously tested, and had only recently had a complete check.
It was just the two of them, her and her husband. No kids. His family is not in his life. Hers is on the other side of the continent. I feel for him so badly, and miss her a whole lot.
For her, she's an example of what Aristotle called a life well spent. She was kind, intelligent, and despite her worries, did the things she wanted, when she wanted. She loved nothing more than being outside in a beautiful place - maybe because she knew how easily it could all go away. She was a cardiac nurse, and enjoyed her work, enjoyed helping people. She had no kids, but loved my little girls like her own. They loved her back. She had a lot of love in her life.
Going to be a tough weekend.

Oh gosh, Rick. That's just terrible. I'm so sorry. Especially having no involved family. Very sad. I hope your kids handle this as best they can.

Thanks so much, everyone. My girls are handling it as best they can - they're little, and bounce back fast.

Ah. That's tribute we should all live up to. Doesn't make it easy for those left behind.
