The clown-vomit buttons were the doing of a previous-to-Bill owner, and while they would not have been my choice, I kinda came to like them. Until one deconstructed itself at IJam, rendering the guitar unusable for that weekend. (I suppose now my traveling maintenance kit will include a set of spare buttons.) I was hoping that the Allparts ebony buttons would work--they weren't all that cheaper than genuine Schallers, but the Stew-Mac packing-and-postage charge of $12+ kinda got up my nose. Marshall can correct me on this, but my recollection is that when I bought the Goodall RS from buddy Jeff McManus, it had the standard tuner knobs. Then Marshall bought a similar guitar and added Leach knobs to the tuners that I kinda liked, so I ordered and added a set to my RS.

No one owns recordings anymore, Bill. Ringo and Paul are both selling out tours and releasing new music. I suppose I listen to about 15-20 hours of the Beatles channel every week, and although it's a biased channel I get the sense that the listening audience is larger than just me and a bunch of old people. Ringo just played at a casino here and referred to the Beatles as "that other band" in deference to his backing band, and performed more covers of other groups than Beatles songs. I am not aware of what Paul's shows are like these days. I realize no one buys recordings anymore -- I guess what I'm wondering is how many online hits or listens the Lads will get once the Boomers are gone.

Well, we haven't lost Eddie Lang or Bob Wills or Stephane Grappelli. . . . Hell, I can point you to Eddie Lang accompanying Ruth Etting in a movie so obscure that I've never seen the whole thing. YouTube has many pathologies, but it also is like a free museum. Well, lots of stuff is accessible online via YouTube and other venues. My larger point is that I wonder what the Beatles' body of work will represent once all the Boomers have kacked. My dottirs appreciate and love the Fab Four from hearing them so often in the car and at home when they were kids, but I doubt they own any recordings of them.

Such a perfect song. It occurred to me today that we may be losing the Beatles. I am not aware of their being popular in the XYZ generations, only Ringo and Paul are left, and the Boomers are dying off. Their music is played only on oldie stations, themselves a vanishing entity.
It would be such a shame if their incredible musical and cultural legacy were to gradually vanish.
Should we be worried?

I bought a seat for the guitar—you never know if they'll let you carry a guitar case aboard a smaller regional aircraft (the overheads were tiny) and there was NO way I was going to let it get into the clutches of baggage handlers. The round-trip airfare was pretty cheap, so I look at it as insurance and the knowledge that it will be with me for the entire trip, as well as insuring that no big-mouth seat mate will chew my ear off for two hours. And if anything major happened to it on the tarmac or in the frigid air at 35,000 feet, well, Ken's current base price, with all standard specs, is $7500 (several thousand more than I paid for this one in 2016, as third owner) and he's about to raise his price. This one is cocobolo back and sides, which was a $600 upgrade when it was built, in 2013. And I don't have $8K to spend on another guitar.
The gate agent and flight attendants were great helping me check in and carry it aboard. Thank you, Bill. It is a beauty and the sound has matured wonderfully. Even Ken was impressed with it.
Very wise -- I don't think I've ever seen anyone do that on a flight. Is there a protocol for how it is belted in? And more important, did you make it to Waffle House?

And today, Ken Hooper installed a beautiful new 1940s celluloid style pick guard on my D-28. So, Howard, how was your-fly-with-guitar experience accomplished? Or did you ship it to NC?
Beautiful instrument, love the new pick guard.

It certainly got my attention. And Diane's. I knew it was coming but I'd forgotten. Sheesh. I have the volume on my phone set quite low, but the alert came in LOUD.

And we are fully recovered from our New England journey. Got a super fare to Portland ME. Rented a car and met my dear friend Bruce in Oakland ME. Bruce lives in Grand Lake CO but his dad and others live in ME, where he partly grew up. Anyway we followed him out to the cabin on the "pond". (1200 acre lake!!) Stayed 2 glorious days there. Looked exactly like On Golden Pond. We bid Bruce adieu and drove into New Hampshire and navigated the Kankamangus Hwy, one of America's great drives. I'll have to say NH was the prettiest of the 4 places. And northern NH is deeeep MAGA country. On into Quebec, stayed in our fave BnB of all time: Ranch St. Hubert in Sant-Hermenegilde QC. What an incredibly gorgeous area. Reminded us of Switzerland's Emmental Valley. Next day drove into Vermont and met a church friend for lunch above Stowe at the Trapp Family Lodge. (Nice property!) After a look-see in Woodstock VT, it was back into NH for an overnight in the Sunapee area. Last day we moseyed back to Portland. Took a few days to recover. Lobster rolls are garbage. Overpriced bland garbage. Sounds like a fantastic trip, Evan! I love that part of the country. And I'm no fan of lobster rolls, either -- why cover up that wonderful, delicate flavor with mayo and dump it into a loaf of bread? I think a lot of Asian dishes do right by lobster. When I was stationed in Newport, R.I., I would occasionally make a payday splurge and order shrimp in lobster sauce at a downtown Chinese place. Man, was that great, and I've never seen anything like its brown sauce, studded with lobster bits, anywhere else.

Al Petteway is someone I am actually quite familiar with. This is sad news, and I'll join in the chorus of those who are really sad to hear it. That's great, Todd -- how did you become familiar with Al?

Was he ever a smoker? I'm just wondering what the catalyst for esophageal cancer is. I think I read somewhere that all the very hot liquids (coffee) we drink can cause long term irritation problems for the esophagus. On your latter point, I think that is correct, which is why I try to limit my caffeine intake to cold brew coffee and iced tea. If I do get gas station coffee it rests in my mug until just warm before I take a sip. Glenn Elvig and I both have Barrett's syndrome, a precursor to throat cancer, so we tiptoe along. I just had a scope, and all appeared well, knock on Brazilian rosewood.

And your job sitch and mine are diametrically opposed -- you deal primarily with kids, I deal with words. You need that interactiiron, mine is supplied via electrons. You live in a rural setting, my workplace is in the heart of a major metro downtown, with all its commuting hassles. With all of that, I need human interaction no matter what. I could spend one day a week working from home if I chose, and I've tried, and just hated it. But I do wish I liked it. I really need quiet -- I have to hear the words in my head, and sometimes I even say them aloud if a passage is puzzling me. So, at home, the classical music is very much in the background. A frequent and dreaded scenario at the office was that I'd be editing away and a gaggle of co-workers would sidle up to the cubicle of a colleague who sits like 4 feet across an aisle from me, with wavy lines coming off them from their perfume, and they'd chat and laff away, nothing work-related at all, unless you count gossip. This is when I'd typically break away for coffee, give them 15 mins to disperse. Invariably, they'd still be there when I returned, maybe even more of them. Even worse was a colleague who would sidle up to the same cross-aisle location, all by her lonesome, and whisper for 20 mins to my other co-worker. At least in that scenario, I could drown out their whispers with headphones.

As far as the arms go, I am at the gym 4-5x/week at 4:00 a.m. working out. Amazing coincidence! I am also up at 4 o'clock or thereabouts and exercising EVERY MORNING, although the exercise is limited to walking 17 feet (you KNOW I just paced it off, don't you?) to the pee-biffy, and then the same distance back to beddie-bye. So maybe not as notable in the weight loss department, but pee certainly weighs something.

If it were me I'd be chomping at the bit to come back; I have the working at home option when not with students and I can't stand it. But in your case good for you on the next six months, but I'm sorry to hear about Barb's plight. I think Barb will be OK, thanks for your concern. And your job sitch and mine are diametrically opposed -- you deal primarily with kids, I deal with words. You need that interaction, mine is supplied via electrons. You live in a rural setting, my workplace is in the heart of a major metro downtown, with all its commuting hassles. I have the classical station on while I'm working, I get up and get a snack or refill my coffee mug every once in a while, watch dog walkers out the window, all is well. The office environment is just about the opposite.

Enjoy your retirement, I sure do. Any thoughts to doing contract work? Maybe some contract gigolo "work," but I have 23 pounds to lose first.
